Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Review and Giveaway: Re-Construct DVD!

I was so excited when I saw this DVD release, I ordered up a copy right away.

Jeanee Ledoux wrote a really cool book on DIY home decor, called Abode a la Mode. Garth Johnson, of Extreme Craft fame, makes a highly entertaining co-host. This DVD offers up 11 new home decor projects using reclaimed materials, and it’s an entirely indie production – the work of many contributors.

There’s a fun preview to watch, by the way, on the DVD’s website.

The project set in Re-Construct is great – there are quick and easy projects, like transferring line art onto vintage ceramics. And then there are complex ones, like building a pretty freakin’ rad upholstered ottoman from corrugated cardboard. (There’s also a free bonus project, making a circuit board clock, on YouTube.)

The quality of the instruction, too, is excellent. Jeanee has really thought these projects through, and offers up tons of great hints and tips for getting the best possible results. Some of the projects involve power tools or simple construction, and they’re completely demystified.

In addition, there’s plenty of time to cover the project steps in detail. You know how most how-to television shows race through demos, collapsing complicated ideas into a few words and hand motions?

The great thing about this 130-minute DVD is, you get to watch the projects progress from start to finish, and gain a solid understanding of how they’re made. After watching, you’d be fully equipped to make them yourself.

Here’s a complete list of projects:

  • Cardboard Ottoman
  • Stenciled Pillow
  • Scooter Dish
  • Cocktail Tray
  • Starry Blender (So Cool!)
  • Toaster Decal
  • Fabric Painting
  • Painted Candleholders
  • High-Heel Hooks
  • Eggshell Planter
  • Book Shelf (As in, a shelf made from a book.)

Rounding out the projects, there are interviews with Garth and Jeanee, plus materials lists for all the projects and an interactive buying guide for handmade products. Very, very cool.

Incidentally, Garth and Jeanee donated two copies of Re-Construct for giving away here. To enter your name in the hat, leave a comment on this post and tell me about a recent home decor craft project you’ve done.

The DVD is all region, so international readers are welcome to enter. You have until noon PST Saturday, April 18, to enter, and then I’ll draw two lucky winners at random. Good Luck!

UPDATE:

Congrats to Anna and Mia, who’ve scored free DVDs!

The most recent decorating project that I did was a 3D “Spring In A Jar” photo frame that I used a reclaimed candle jar and filled and decorated with a photo and dollar store items with a Spring theme. One of the items that I put in the jar was a “Shaun The Sheep” made out of mostly upcycled items (cotton from an asprin bottle, googly eyes from other failed projects, and black fabric scraps)

My last project was making a bed cover with patchwork and pillows for my daughter’s bedroom. Would love to win the DVD as I’m always looking for new projects. Thanks!

I’m in the process of tearing up my hubby’s old white undershirts into strips so I can crochet them into a nice rug. It’s just been taking awhile :) I want to dye the strips into a coordinating color.

Painted an old cupboard and added legs to be used for towel storage in the bathroom. Those DVD’d would be wonderful. I am always looking to ‘redeem’ things around here.
    Blessings on your day!

  • I’d never heard of those dvds before – they sound awesome, totally my kind of thing! And yay contest! My last project was a few months ago, but I’m pretty proud of it – I turned a pretty but broken umbrella into a lampshade for my apartment entryway. Turned out pretty sweet! • My current home decor projects include growing herbs on my apartment’s balcony and framing some pieces of scrapbooking paper to hang up instead of gratuitous pictures of me.
