I was so excited when I saw this DVD release, I ordered up a copy right away.
Jeanee Ledoux wrote a really cool book on DIY home decor, called Abode a la Mode. Garth Johnson, of Extreme Craft fame, makes a highly entertaining co-host. This DVD offers up 11 new home decor projects using reclaimed materials, and it’s an entirely indie production – the work of many contributors.
There’s a fun preview to watch, by the way, on the DVD’s website.

The project set in Re-Construct is great – there are quick and easy projects, like transferring line art onto vintage ceramics. And then there are complex ones, like building a pretty freakin’ rad upholstered ottoman from corrugated cardboard. (There’s also a free bonus project, making a circuit board clock, on YouTube.)
The quality of the instruction, too, is excellent. Jeanee has really thought these projects through, and offers up tons of great hints and tips for getting the best possible results. Some of the projects involve power tools or simple construction, and they’re completely demystified.

In addition, there’s plenty of time to cover the project steps in detail. You know how most how-to television shows race through demos, collapsing complicated ideas into a few words and hand motions?
The great thing about this 130-minute DVD is, you get to watch the projects progress from start to finish, and gain a solid understanding of how they’re made. After watching, you’d be fully equipped to make them yourself.
Here’s a complete list of projects:
- Cardboard Ottoman
- Stenciled Pillow
- Scooter Dish
- Cocktail Tray
- Starry Blender (So Cool!)
- Toaster Decal
- Fabric Painting
- Painted Candleholders
- High-Heel Hooks
- Eggshell Planter
- Book Shelf (As in, a shelf made from a book.)
Rounding out the projects, there are interviews with Garth and Jeanee, plus materials lists for all the projects and an interactive buying guide for handmade products. Very, very cool.

Incidentally, Garth and Jeanee donated two copies of Re-Construct for giving away here. To enter your name in the hat, leave a comment on this post and tell me about a recent home decor craft project you’ve done.
The DVD is all region, so international readers are welcome to enter. You have until noon PST Saturday, April 18, to enter, and then I’ll draw two lucky winners at random. Good Luck!
UPDATE:

Congrats to Anna and Mia, who’ve scored free DVDs!

Wow, this would be awesome! I guess the most recent things I have made have been pillows made from bits and pieces of fabric that I have had left from other projects. They have turned out completely adorable! I also have been into making ceramic coasters lately with vintage stamps or other vintage ephemera. They are really fun and look really cool.
Thanks!

The most recent DIY project (and there have been many) was to stencil a moorish trellis pattern (a big one) in the entryway. I found a design I liked online, enlarged it, cut my stencil out of a Dollar Tree kitchen cutting mat (the bestest crafty-stuff ever, and two large sheets for $1), and stenciled the design using a champagne metallic craft paint. The entire project was under $5.

This DVD looks amazing – I was just about to get v depressed cos I’m in the UK and I didn’t think I’d be able to play it here when I noticed you said it was all region – hurrah! I’m decorating my flat at the moment so this would be great.
Thanks for the fab giveaway and great blog xx

Thanks for the tip. I’m completely intrigued by the high heel hook (as I’ve just given them up – the high heels not the hook) and must know how they’re done.
I’m knitting up a cushion from leftover yarn only and I’m starting a skirt made from my husband’s worn out khaki’s.
Love the podcast by the way.

I think one of the best home decor solutions I came up with recently was my office desk. I bought an awesome shadow box style table top from IKEA and they didn’t have the legs to fit it in stock so I improvised and went to Lowes and bought 4 Closetmaid modular units (2 with shelves, 2 with cabinets); paired one of each on both sides as the base for my desk and now I have a fun and functional work desk.

man! i hope it’s me! my daughters and i needed some containers recently and we used cans from food. these things keep falling over so we glued pennies on the bottom so we can store tall things in them too like rulers and scissors. they don’t tip over now.
thanks!

Since we rent from the council we can’t do a whole lot inside the flat, so does garden work count? we put in 2 veggie beds and extended a flower bed. Put in more roses and a trellis to help them climb. Our bird table is made from tree limbs that were from a tree that was in the In-laws yard. Works great and re-used the wood that normally would have gone to the skip. the birds love it and have stripped the bark off the limbs to take away. We figure that since the council doesn’t care about what we do with the outside we are going to make it a little haven for the birds and grow some veggies too. :)

The lastest DIY project is working on a crocheted granny square wall hanging for the living room. I recently learned how to make granny squares and I’ve been going nuts with them- it’s all different colors, connected with black. A pretty classic look.

This looks super! I’d love to win one of these DVD’s! I’d been disgusted with my entertainment center for quite some time, and decided to modernize it a bit (mostly just used darker stain, but it’s a huge difference!).

This has such awesome ideas! I’d love to own it. Every since I discovered Ready made magazine I have been on a re-purposing roll. Thanks for the chance to win.

This looks great! My latest diy has been working on updating my cabinets in my kitchen. From cat-vomit color to a much more modern black. Also there were many knitted & sewn baby gifts made in the last month….

I love to do projects around the house as well as repairing things. I just made velvet curtains and lined them with a lovely polka dot fabric. THey are very cool if I do say so myself. But for now, I want to be out in the dirt with plants and such.

we have a toilet seat with leprosy, and today I am going to replace it with a non-leprous one. I need the DVD because this is the best idea I have. *puppy eyes*

(I’ll be writing it up as an instructable!)

I’ve transformed plain Ikea furniture into fun pieces in our apartment… I re-painted a stool to look like it’s covered in paint chips and a cupboard got some castors and a tree design that incorporated the knots of the wood into the tree. I love improving our space with fun projects that are a creative outlet as well!
