Makin’ For Maker Faire: Cricut Tote Bag

Here’s some more Cricut-crafting. What exactly have I cut out here? Well, nothing – I used the Cricut to draw.

You can get these little marker packs for the Cricut. Pop one in in place of the cutting blade, and you can draw any image that the machine can cut.

What’s even cooler: the markers are permanent. I put this sample through a warm-water wash and full-heat dry. There was no color distortion or fade!

So I made myself a set of patches and pieced the tote using my special “I-Fear-Math” method.

…And then added an applique at the end. I was trying to channel this craft book, really.

    help! did you back your muslin? I put some iron on interfacing on mine, and it bled all over no matter what pressure I set it to. Did you use muslin? Or broadcloth? Did you prewash it? Thanks in advance!

    Hi, Natalie - I used unwashed, medium-weight muslin, with no
    interfacing. I just burnished it heavily to the mat, and then taped it
    down at the edges. A light pressure with the marker worked best -
    setting was 1 or 2, as I recall.

  • You know, I have really been trying to resist buying a Cricut, but you are making it more and more difficult all the time.

    Meanwhile, I'll probably end up breaking down and buying one next week and then I'll be all sad that I did not have it *before* I made my wedding invitations. Ah, Crafter's Remorse. ;)
  • Gretchin, there is apparently software that allows you to connect the Cricut to a computer and make cuts of the fonts and dingbats you have there. I haven't tried it. This video has more info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2flUV2s2Q
  • Katie, for the heart motif, I used the Storybook cartridge. For everything else, I used the Home Accents cartridge.

    I also increased the pressure just a little - the package instructions for the markers say to use them on a pressure setting of 2 (I think), but I used 3 or 4. It makes a nicer line. Have fun!

    I love the bag & now you have got me thinking about all the designs I can draw. I love to use my markers with my Cricut but strangely I do not own a set of the Cricut markers. Shhh, don't tell ProvoCraft, lol.

    I use Crayola PipSqueaks, Mini Sharpies, Gel Pens & any other mini pencil I can find. All you need is a pencil gripper.

    Look forward to seeing your other Cricut creations. I do really love the bag.
