Makin’ For Maker Faire: Cricut Tote Bag

Here’s some more Cricut-crafting. What exactly have I cut out here? Well, nothing – I used the Cricut to draw.

You can get these little marker packs for the Cricut. Pop one in in place of the cutting blade, and you can draw any image that the machine can cut.

What’s even cooler: the markers are permanent. I put this sample through a warm-water wash and full-heat dry. There was no color distortion or fade!

So I made myself a set of patches and pieced the tote using my special “I-Fear-Math” method.

…And then added an applique at the end. I was trying to channel this craft book, really.

If you’re coming to Maker Faire, I hope you’ll come by the Provo Craft booth. We’re going to have all kinds of cool machines for you to play with. And I’m doing a fun make-and-take! But more on that tomorrow…

Neat application! Any chance you can bend the Provo Craft people’s arm and get them to giveaway one or two or ten of those gems to the little people who read your corner of the internet? Say perhaps only those in an 80909 zip code perhaps?

Let a girl dream! Oh – and if they’d throw in some plane tickets so I could be at Makers Faire, then my life would be complete!

Well, maybe not complete-complete, but surely a step closer ;) I look forward to hearing all the hubbub.

I love the bag & now you have got me thinking about all the designs I can draw. I love to use my markers with my Cricut but strangely I do not own a set of the Cricut markers. Shhh, don’t tell ProvoCraft, lol.

I use Crayola PipSqueaks, Mini Sharpies, Gel Pens & any other mini pencil I can find. All you need is a pencil gripper.

Look forward to seeing your other Cricut creations. I do really love the bag.

    Very interesting!

I haven’t never seen something like this before here in Singapore…must go check out a scrapbooking store to see if they might carry this.

  • Katie, for the heart motif, I used the Storybook cartridge. For everything else, I used the Home Accents cartridge.

I also increased the pressure just a little – the package instructions for the markers say to use them on a pressure setting of 2 (I think), but I used 3 or 4. It makes a nicer line. Have fun!

  • Gretchin, there is apparently software that allows you to connect the Cricut to a computer and make cuts of the fonts and dingbats you have there. I haven’t tried it. This video has more info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2flUV2s2Q

  • You know, I have really been trying to resist buying a Cricut, but you are making it more and more difficult all the time.

Meanwhile, I’ll probably end up breaking down and buying one next week and then I’ll be all sad that I did not have it *before* I made my wedding invitations. Ah, Crafter’s Remorse. ;)

  • Dude, this is beyond beautiful. My projects are totally chump compared to your craftsmanship and ingenuity.

  • Did you iron on interfacing before drawing? This is gorgeous!

I would like some more information on the I fear math method. I would love to make a bad like this, but am not so good at following patterns.

Tell me about the process for adhering the muslin to the cutting mat so that it does not ‘hang-up’ Thanks, I get frustrated with hopeful fabric printing and cutting.

  • natalie_m

help! did you back your muslin? I put some iron on interfacing on mine, and it bled all over no matter what pressure I set it to. Did you use muslin? Or broadcloth? Did you prewash it? Thanks in advance!

  • SisterDiane

HI, Natalie – I used medium-weight, unwashed muslin. I didn't add any interfacing, I just burnished it very firmly to the mat and then taped the edges. I used light pressure on the marker – a 1.5 setting, as I recall. Hope that helps!

Hi, Natalie – I used unwashed, medium-weight muslin, with no
interfacing. I just burnished it heavily to the mat, and then taped it
down at the edges. A light pressure with the marker worked best –
setting was 1 or 2, as I recall.

    Hope that helps!
