My friends, Summer has officially arrived in Portland.
We hit the Hillsboro Market this morning, and had a splendid time. There are raspberries everywhere! We got gluttonous and scored both reds and goldens.

I love it when all the really colorful veggies begin showing up. And I can’t wait to roast some of this purple cauliflower, (Thanks to Michelle, who showed me how. If you haven’t tried this, it’s so easy and delicious.)

…Now who has a recipe for this?

I’m all hopped up to make these zucchini cakes soon.

Gotta go now, and start making the season’s first batch of berry muffins. Yippeeeeee!

Looks like you guys were out gathering berries too! We just got home with a huge couple flats we picked this morning at the Pumpkin Patch! I’ll bring berry sauce for Katin’s cheescake!
Thank you so much for the link to the roasted cauliflower. We love cauliflower and this recipe sounds perfect. The only ones I’ve seen so far were for the whole head. Much prefer this.
Ditto “lamdawt” WHAT is that green bumpy stuff???? Where is that Wikipedia link you so carefully taught me to always include in my posts??????

It’s all gorgeous and to think most of it is edible too!
Does the purple cauli retain its color when cooked?

Not only do I not have a recipe for the crazy awesome green veggie, but I don’t even know what the heck it is or what it’s related to…
So glad you like the cauliflower roasted that way, it is the best and so easy, too. Oh, and if you don’t mind me answering Maureen for you, the purple cauliflower totally does stay purple! Mix it with regular white and it will dye the regular stuff, too. So fun.

For your romanesque fractalflower (as we call it in my kitchen): soak in salt water for about half an hour because, um, bugs. But enough about my Christmas Slug Miracle. Cook the head, whole, in salted water until just tender. Drain, place in a casserole dish. Dot with butter and Cover that puppy in shredded cheese (Gruyere for dressy occasions, but whatever hard cheese you like with a bit of sharpness works) Pop it into a 400 degree oven to get the cheese melty, a bit brown, and toasty. Showstopper.

I have a recipe for the Romanesco broccoli!! I just traveled to Italy this past March and when at our cooking class in Rome we cooked this. It’s fabulous!! You can cook it however you like regular broccoli. We heated olive oil in a pan with a few anchovies (they melt in, so there isn’t a strong flavor) and lots of garlic, salt and pepper. We blanched the broccoli and then added it to the saute pan and cooked for a bit. It is absolutely delicious! Good luck! I have a picture of the Romanesco broccoli at the market in Rome here: http://paperandstitch.blogspot.com/2009/04/la-vita-bella.html How exciting that they grow it in Portland!!

The green bumpy thing, the romanesco, you can treat just like you would do with broccoli or cauliflower. Just cook it, or roast it.
I love your pictures, by the way. Those colours, wonderful!

I’m so excited for the farmers’ markets this week! i work every other 7 days, with every other 7 days off, so was unable really to go to my two favorite markets last week. I LOVE BROCCOLI SEASON!! (I haven’t managed to grow it very well myself, I’m so glad that I can get my fix easily at the markets)
