Smub for Crafters

I have something a little techy for you today – but if you’re a crafter who shares links to interesting websites on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, or others, you might find this useful.

I’ve been playing around with a new service called Smub lately. It’s a nifty little tool that makes saving and sharing web links much easier. Here’s what I like about it:

First, when I’m on my iPod Touch, I can easily bookmark or share any website just by typing smub.it/ in front of the URL. The same would be true for and iPhone, a Blackberry, or any mobile that accesses the internet.

I can also save web links to my Smub page from my web browser. You can install a simple toolbar for most browsers that lets you jump into Smub with one click.

I especially like this because I find cool things on the web all day long, but I may not want to send all these links out on Twitter as I find them. Bingo – now I just keep them listed on Smub.

When I’m ready to send out a link, I just select it from my list, and choose the place I want to send it from the buttons at the bottom there.

I can add my own comments to the link before it goes out, too.

…And look at the URL for the link! When I bookmark it in Smub, I get to customize it. Which is way cooler than most other URL-shortening services, which generate a random series of numbers and letters.

Lastly, Smub keeps stats on the links I’ve sent out on Twitter – or any other social media system. This helps give me some idea of what kinds of links my Twitter-buddies like best, so I can share more of those. Like, apparently, things related to plarn.

So – I like. I hope you dig it, too!

  • V. cool. I admit I'm tech-challenged and don't even text or have an iPhone, but I can certainly see this would be really helpful for someone whose finger is on the pulse of the community. I do enjoy your links on twitter!

    sincerely,

  • Thank you for giving me the power over Smub!!! :) My webbing is so much easier!
  • So can we be friends with you on smub now? My username is sunshinetalia. :-)

Hmmm... I poked around, but I don't see any social networking element
to the Smub site. Good thing we're already friends on Twitter! :-)
  • Oh thank goodness! You know, I've been noticing you using Smub, but hadn't been able to explore it much. I agree with planetjune and Kim re: the bar and the long URLs. But it seems like the ability to schedule out when you tweet something & keep track of stats and things you've bookmarked ... maybe I can get over that.

Sometimes my head spins at all the ways to bookmark/share things/pictures. I'm ready for something that streamlines it all! A girl can dream, right? ;)

Actually, there are two ways around the long-URL thing:

    1. The shorter your Smub username, the shorter those custom URLs would
be. (Not practical for all, of course, but an option.)

    2. If you bypass the bookmarking and just Smub links directly to
Twitter (or wherever), it will auto-generate a much shorter,
    randomized URL.
  • Ahh, now I see why you use this! As a Twitter user, I find the smub URLs annoying - they are so long, it makes it hard to RT your links because the URL uses so many characters. But I can see the usefulness as a link-saver and manager.
  • It's very tempting as a link-sharer, but I gotta admit the bar it puts at the top of pages you go to as a link-user drives me batty. I don't know if it would drive me batty if it were the only service that does it, but with Facebook and ow.ly doing it, I feel like I'm back in the late '90s feeling stuck in frames again!

Still, I'd love such an easy way to keep track of stuff I want to share that's more flexible than queuing them up on Tumblr. Hmm...

I'll admit, as a link-user, I'm less than thrilled with those bars,
too. But you can easily close the Smub bar on any web-page - there's a
Close button in the upper right corner.

Oh- and, my understanding is that they plan to make the bar optional in future, so you can send your links out bar-free. Woo!
