So… I had my book signing at Powell’s last night. This was, co-incidentally, my last book event, wrapping up two weeks of intense promotions. And it was pretty dang cool.

One of the best things (from a geeky standpoint) about author events at Powell’s is this freaking amazing podium. I’ve wanted to stand behind that bad-boy for years. (Those are real old-book spines mounted on the front, by the way.)

I’d also like to point out that I was standing on a giant wooden book. Heh. I love that.

Anyway, I managed to say everything I came prepared to say, and then K. passed out fabric squares to everyone and I led the group through folding a couple petals.

…Which they all caught onto very quickly. It’s always fun to watch people realize that this craft is nowhere near as difficult as it may look from the finished flowers.
(You can kind of see Susan, Lee, and Caitlin in this photo. Thank you so much for coming, Ladies!)

Then I signed some books, plus a big pile of stock for Powell’s. (So, locals, if you’re so inclined, you can head to the downtown store for a signed copy. Signed, I might add, with the special pens Rachel gave me.)

Mom helped a ton with setting up and tearing down. And, I had the all-too-rare opportunity to ask a room full of people to give her some applause for her amazing how-to photos.
(She says I owe her big time for that. Heh.)
There’s a small Flickr set if you’d like to see.
…And that concludes the acute phase of my book launch. Thank you for coming along! And I promise, we’ll resume regular crafty programming this week. Right after I spend the rest of today sleeping.

Oh man, I've only been to Powell's twice in my life. What an awesome place! I could live in there. Congratulations on making it through your book tour! Hope it sells a bajillion copies.
Oh, Diane!! Diane! I wanted to be there. Diane? You looked marvelous. I love the long-ish hair! And look at how many people came!
I'm reading the book now. I was going to review it, but thought maybe I should wait for the tour to be over and then maybe inspire another run. It's a great book. Very well written, of course, and the history and variety of Kanzashi are so enlightening. I really look forward to doing it myself. In fact…
I'm taking squares on the plane to Phoenix next month. So, there.
NO!
DON'T TRY TO STOP ME.
Wow that podium is too awesome!
Congrats on wrapping up your book launch! I started folding petals to make flowers to stick in a vase (other readers – one of the projects in the book!) and will have a couple flowers done hopefully today.
congratulations, diane! i so, so wish i could have been there!
For future reference (and for word nerds): You weren't standing behind the podium– you were standing on it! The podium is below your feet, the lectern is in front of your body.
PS- Powell's is super cool. I'd like to go there some day!
that podium is amazing!
looks like a successful time was had :D
Yay, it was fun!! And I got to meet your mom!!
also, just wanted to let you know that Caitlin has a blog too – http://www.biscuitsandjam.com!
Sorry I had to miss it! It looks like it was a great event.
Diane! I thought you told me you were going to rest today! I suppose you are going to try to tell me Pushkin wrote this post.
…Well, I asked him to, but he said I was interrupting his Morning
Sleep Time.
OOh – thanks! I didn't know…
Diane, Congratulations on the success of your book. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. You and your Mom are the prettiest ladies. I hope you know that you inspired me to write a craft book. I guess I need to start a blog. Where am I going to get the time? LOL.
So cool, Diane! Congratulations! I love Powell's & that podium is awesome. That must have been a great moment.
OOh, how exciting! Good luck, and let me know if I can be of any help!
yay! looks like an awesome event. congrats!!!!!
So great! Congratulations!!!
Hooray! Congratulations! I wish I could have gone, what fun!
Lovely! From the pictures I can even imagine the smell of the books and the creek of the floors!
'Tis the best-smelling place in the world! :-)
I'm so upset I missed this! I need to be better about keeping up to date with my blog reading and should probably sign up for Powell's notices on author events. :)
I'm sorry you missed it, too! There's just too much crafty to keep up
with in PDX…
I'm so happy for you!! That looks super fun. Is there anywhere non-locals can buy a signed book online?
There WILL be, very soon! I'll post as soon as I get myself together
on that front.
Shoot! I can't believe I missed this. I would love to have been there. Believe me, I'm gonna be kicking myself over missing your book signing for a while. (Would you write another one, so I can come to the next one?)
