Help CraftyPod Turn 100!

in Crafty Community

This blows my mind, but the CraftyPod podcast is nearing its 100th episode! I thought it would be fun to celebrate with a special show, and I’d love your help.

My plan is to have K interview me, and the questions would come from you! Seriously, what do you want to know about the show? Or podcasting? Or craft? Or – anything?

Leave your question as a comment on this post. I promise to answer anything you throw at me.

I’m also planning an on-podcast giveaway, with fabulous prizes. If you submit a question, you’re entered.

So – fire away…

  • How did I totally miss this?! Congrats Diane on this milestone! One day you will truly know just how much you and Craftypod have influenced and changed the world! ;) My questions is simple, but complex: why do you do it?
  • Bethany
Here's my question. What are some craft projects that didn't turn out the way you had planned?
  • wendy m.
Hmm, already so many great questions, it's hard to think of anything else. But here goes - what is the oddest/weirdest thing you've crafted with?
  • KimberlyJDC
I totally LOVE your podcast! I've been listening to you for over a year now and have listened to several shows multiple times. Your podcast about Etsy has opened up a whole new world for me... I started selling a few weeks ago... my question is: Why haven't you ever tried to sell all of your "crafty goodness" on there?

PS - Please do another podcast about buttons, I'm obsessed with buttons and have listened to #33 over and over again... see I even have the number memorized.
  • Hi Sister Diane! Do you feel like, where your are now in your crafty career is where you were headed when you first started out?
  • If you'd asked me for a topic I would have demanded a show where YOU were interviewed and really grilled! I am so looking forward to this! I hope K will add some questions too, and let you sweat for a while! hehe. Coming up with a question though is SO hard, how do you do it?

    Q: Do you keep a diary/journal or sketchbook/notebook? What's inside it? :-)

    hugs!
  • Ok. How about this? If you were trapped on a desert island with just one small tub of craft supplies, what would you hope would be in that tub, and why?
  • 1Kari1
Wowzers! I've been thinking of what I would ask you, and when I got here tonight, you already have so many great questions! I feel kind of bad about adding another one to your long list. However, I want to know so: How did you decide to teach classes at places like your local library? And how did you get them to agree to it?

Bonus Question: What is your favorite holiday song?

Congrats on 100 episodes, I have listened to every single one.
  • I really enjoyed your podcast about selling vs hobby. I have a lot of friends who urge me to sell my crafts, but I worry that it'll take the fun out of creating. What can I say to them to so they'll shut up about it? Or should I just give in and sell some stuff?
  • SweeTart77
Congrats Sister D! Wow, this year is going pretty well for you so far. Thanks for being such a resource, inspiration, and supportive crafty pal with your generosity, curiosity, and other osities...
Question: Any trends you see on the crafty horizon? Now that we've had our fill of aprons, owls, and scrabble tile necklaces (but NOT kanzashi - we're just getting started on that puppy!) what's our next pitstop on the highway of crafty goodness?
  • Heather
Hi Diane, I wanted to know what some of the best resources were that you've discovered for up-and-coming crafters. Business basics, getting started selling kinds of resources. Thanks and congratulations. :)
  • pauloverton
    Dear Diane,

Now that you're a rich and famous author, do you think the money will change you? Will you forget the little people? Subquestion: Have you had many encounters with the paparazzi yet? If you need any help in that area, I've had a lot of experience with the tabloids and can offer advice. I don't know if I'll ever live down those bathing suit pictures.
  • SisterDiane
The money might change me if there were any. :-)
  • What's the strangest thing you have ever made or thought of making?
  • sometimescrafter
    Q. Favorite spots to get crafty inspiration around town and favorite spots to shop for all things crafty. Do you ever find yourself crafting in public, likes say a coffee shop or the such? Not for classes, but for "just because".
  • mimik
Wow- 100 fabulous podcasts! Congratulations! I love reading all the questions- I can't wait to hear the podcast with all the responses.
  • knottyneedle
What one area of crafting would you next like to explore?
  • futuregirl
    Oh! And congratulations!!!!!
  • futuregirl
Holy smokes. People are really grilling you. And I thought my question was tough: Why are you so awesome?!

Ha! Seriously, though ... Is creating a podcast like crafting? Is it like something else that's not-crafting? Have you developed a set of skills and a process that helps guide you? Do they all take around the same amount of time or are some harder than others? What makes a podcast hard or easy? Why is your mom so awesome?!
  • SisterDiane
Ooh, good ones. I may need a whole podcast for that last one, though... :-)
  • Emily
    Hi Sister Diane!

My friend and I would like to know if you ever plan on starting up the Church of Craft again in the Portland area. We both heard the podcast a little too late and of course were excited about the idea. You would have two more members if you ever decided to do it again. Thanks for such a wonderful podcast.
  • Congratulations, Sister Diane! I can't wait for the next 100 podcasts. My question is: how do you think your crafty life would have played out if you had lived in an age without the internet and the connections it makes possible?
    Love,
    Katie.
P.S. Whenever anyone says 'rock on' or anything similar, your voice always pops into my head saying 'craft on everybody!' and it makes me smile. =)
    P.P.S. Don't change the music!
  • SisterDiane
Thanks, Katie - I'm glad of this question - it's the key to a whole lot...
  • cathyofcalifornia
    question 1:
what was the first craft you ever did? (and if it still exists let's see it!)

    question 2:
out of all if the over the top plastic canvas projects you have run across what is your all time favorite? (and please feel free to go into great detail)

    congratulations
    xo
  • SisterDiane
Heh. Heh heh heh heh. :-)
  • Meg
100 posts, wow congratulations! My question is... Who would be your dream podcast interview and why?
  • Ok. Don't hate me. I ask in the interest of mental exercise, not torture. :)

A thought experiment: Imagine you're preparing your *200th* episode. What's the state of craft, of publishing, of podcasting?

Put another way, what do you think the next five years will hold for crafts, for publishing, for podcasting, where your answer may or may not be influenced by what you learned during your first 100 episodes?
  • SisterDiane
    Right. A softball, then. :-)
  • lydiaadams
Congratulations Diane. I have listened to your podcasts since the beginning and have really enjoyed them all. You are a great inspiration.

My question is: How do you structure your day? It seems you have a lot of things going on and I'm curious how your plan it all out.

I will be a free agent in a few weeks, and I'm freaking out about making a schedule, so your input would be great.

    Congratulations again. Wow
  • SisterDiane
I could talk for several hours on this subject alone. :-) Thanks for
    the question!
  • Oh my goodness! I can't believe you are heading in to your 100th episode! Congrats! I am so thankful I stumbled on to your web site and podcast so many years ago. I can honestly say that your podcast has served as one of the most influential sources of inspiration for me over the last three and a half years. Your interview style is absolute perfection, and your attention to detail and the (very obvious) amount of time and work you put in to each episode make them all so special. You ROCK!

So here's my goofy question, because it goes back to one of the things that first caught my "ear" with your podcast (aside from your smooth as velvet voice! ;)

How did you decide on Esquivel as the theme music, and have you ever had thoughts about changing it? (hopefully not. ;)
  • iamdawt
Congratulations on your 100th, Diane! As I've said before, your podcast is my all-time favorite, truly. Thank you for providing me with hours and hours of craftilicious food for thought!

Speaking for myself, I admit to having a different on-line persona than I do in the real world, mainly because I'm on the shy side. Writing is so much easier for me as I can write-delete-write-delete until I get it right.

So, my question for you is, have you ever interviewed an individual you thought would knock your socks off only to find they were too difficult to pull information from or just plain uninteresting to make it work? If so, how did/do you handle telling someone "thankyouverymuchnevermind"?

  • SisterDiane
Wowee... that's a loaded one! But I get what you're saying.
  • lizandrsn
I know you're a self-employed person working in the Crafts Industry (Hope that comes out in the positive way I mean it to be). Have you had to make changes in the way you choose projects and materials to suit chasing a paycheck, or are you still able to soothe your own internal craftiness while paying the Light & Gas bill? And how are you able (if you are able) to step away from what the General Public thinks of crafting -- like church bazarrs and grey hair crocheters working TP covers to match your favorite NFL team? (Know what I mean?)
Happy 100th and here's looking at the next 100.
  • SisterDiane
Another great one! Man, I'm going to have to bring my A-game for this
    show...
  • geekxnerd
Oh my gosh - this is so fun! I can't believe that CraftyPod is turning 100!

I think my question would be -

Have you ever had/or have any non-crafty pursuits/hobbies in real life? (I know, where would you find the time with all of that plastic canvas in the world...).
  • SisterDiane
..Wait - you mean there are hobbies other than plastic canvas? :-)
  • mrsjones25
I love seeing my neck tie bag that I made pop up on your posts every once and a while. I'm still beaming inside that you of all the crafty people that inspire me purchased it.

    My question for you.......

Now that you have done 100 shows, go back to the first one and knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?
  • SisterDiane
Wow, that's a great question! And I still carry that necktie bag a
lot, and every time I do, I get compliments on it.

  • Oh, wait. Here's a better one. How far in advance do you plan your podcast episodes?

I'm new to the podcasting scene, and I haven't quite found my groove yet. Your show is so well put together and professional. I want to be like you when I grow up!
  • kim_spoonflower
Asked as a performance ninny, do you ever have stage-fright before an interview? Or pod-fright...?
  • pam
I love this idea for celebrating your 100th pod cast anniversary! Can't wait for air time!
  • I have a question! What was the hardest part of the book writing process? Is writing an ebook easier than writing a paper book?

    I adore your podcast!
  • SisterDiane
As it turns out, there might be, ahem, a whole podcast on that subject
    in the, ahem, near future...

Congrats on your 100 podcast. What made you want to podcast in the first place? Did you have any journalistic training on interviewing people or did you just wing it because you do a very good job. I love your choice of music too.
  • What is your all-time favorite crafting tool/material, and why?
  • Fun idea!! I'll have to think of some hard-hitting questions.
  • Out of 100 episodes, which one was the most fun to do and why? :)
  • SisterDiane
Wow. Better start thinking about that now...
  • Jen
what craft or topic do readers/listeners ask you about most?

what craft or process has been the one that best connects you with others?

    happy 100!
  • SisterDiane
    Mmmmmm...another good one! Thanks!
  • Laure
The recent resurgence of crafting seems to go through fads - just like everything. It seemed to gradually grow from yarn to sewing to anything that could be considered a green craft. My question has to do with what's next. What do you think the next big craft "fad" will be?
  • SisterDiane
    Oooh, me likey that one!
  • I hope you get my comment because I have an important question.

Do you ever dream about crafting? This is a multi-question question. Do you ever go to a museum, for example, and see so many things that rock your world that you suddenly start dreaming about making bronze sculptures or bas reliefs? I guess my point is, you are so prolific and multi-dimensional, do you ever find your crafting life working its way into your fantasy life in odd ways that could never translate to reality?

I've never dreamed I painted the Sistine Chapel, but I did dream in detail that I built my own helicopter and painted it with Peter Max designs.

Congrats on the first 100 !!
  • SisterDiane
HA! I may need a whole podcast just to answer that one, but I'll take
    a shot! You rock, Chris!
