Review: Wool Pets

I’ve been dancing around needle felting for a while now. I totally want to get into this craft, but I fear that when I do, it’ll take over my life.

In what may be an act of fate, Laurie Sharp stopped by my demo at Urban Craft Uprising and introduced herself. She gave me a copy of her beautiful book, Wool Pets. And now I really, really want to start needle-felting!

Laurie’s critters are freaking adorable. And she’s created a great reference that breaks these shapes down into simple components, so they’re easy to reproduce, or build upon.

Each design has very clear step-by-step photos. Laurie’s husband, Kevin, did a bang-up job on the photography.

More cuteness!

…And more! You can see lots more images of Laurie’s work at her website, where she also has kits and roving – from her own sheep!

One of my favorite parts of the book is this little gnome design. I’m pretty dang impressed with the facial sculpting here.

I wonder if I could take some kind of year-long needle-felting sabbatical?

  • Aww that little gnome is just the sweetest little thing! What beautiful work.
  • There must be grants available for wool needle-felting sabbaticals . . . maybe you could go live in a convent with wool-raising nuns! And yes, the facial sculpting - and resulting expression - on that gnome? Priceless!
  • This is very CUTE and very appealing! Because of that, I have viewed several instructional videos on wool felting. It's like trying to work myself up to cliff diving...

    It's never going to happen.

D-Right with you on this one. I'd love to pick up this craft too. It looks like so much fun and, yeah, that gnome face is ridiculous! How's she do that? Impressive.
  • Adoooooooorables! the owl is a cuter, the gnome! so real i want to be a needle felt figure i do not want to be a human any more.
    Love sister take care.
  • Wow I love the cat, it's so cute. I've just signed up for a needle felting class to make holiday decorations... I was excited before but after seeing this I can't wait!

Oh man, that would be awesome.. a needle felting sabbatical. What a thought!
  • I've been on an Over-a-Year long felting sabbatical (not by choice, but as a result of the crappy economy). I must say that it has been surprisingly amazing!! Maybe you need to try it!
