Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

CraftyPod #101: Crafty Retailing (the brick & mortar kind), with Pat Riesenburger

In this show:

- An interview with Pat Riesenburger, who works with brick-and-mortar craft store owners. She writes a great blog: The Crafty Retailer.

- Get an interesting glimpse into the world of crafty retailing: competing with big-box stores, a tough economy, and the internet.

- Learn some ways to support your favorite local craft stores.

Links:

- Check out The Crafty Retailer, and recommend it to your local store owners.

- Pat’s two businesses are Access Crystal and Aussie Threads & Fibers.

- I love these Portland indie craft stores:

Twisted
Cool Cottons
Gossamer
Collage
The Knittn’ Kitten

…What are your favorites in your city?

I love Thimble Pleasures in Chapel Hill, NC for fabulous quilting cottons, and Mulberry Silks in Carrboro when I'm shopping for more clothing-appropriate fabrics. I have to say, too, that precisely because of the crap economy lately, I've redoubled my efforts to support local rather than chain stores and small businesses wherever I can find them. The big guys can take the hit, but small-scale crafts- and business people can't! I'm buying way less for sure, but trying to spend my money with those folks who need it most. (Stepping off my soap box now since I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here anyway….)

Thanks, I enjoy both brick and mortar and online shops. My Dave quilt shop is adirondack quilts which is in an old shirt factory and now a spot for artists.

  • Thank you for this great podcast, Diane. You gave me many ideas for more blog posts. :-D

In Montreal, I really love Effiloché, it's a knitting and sewing store with a fine crafty mood.

  • Thanks so much for sharing your favorite shops. I am heading down to Portland this weekend and hope to hit a few. Love the show!

thank you for doing this podcast. great tips for the crafters and their businesses. even though online buying is easy and sometimes less expensive, i think that we will always love the brick and mortar stores. we crafters are pretty friendly people, for the most part, i think that we like to meet face to face and also like to touch and feel all of thise good crafty products.
    thanks again!
