Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Yippee! A new ebook: Crafty Tree Trimmings!

I am super, super excited to share this project with you. Back in July, a group of crafters put our heads together and dreamed up this pretty holiday ebook – Crafty Tree Trimmings!

It’s a collection of how-tos for lovely holiday ornaments, and we hope you’ll give these projects a try for your ornament swap, home decor, and small gifty needs.

Each of us contributed a design – Susan Beal, Betz White, Kayte Terry, Linda Permann, and Patricia Zapata, who also did an amazing job designing our book. Oh – and me.

I think it’s really fun, how different our styles are, and how many interesting approaches to crafty ornaments the book covers. And we all did designs that don’t need a lot of specialty materials – you probably have most of the supplies in your stash right now.

I’m also excited that this ebook is more than a pretty face. We had two goals for this project:

  • To raise money for Project Linus. They’re a nationwide charity that collects handmade blankets for children who are suffering from illness or trauma, or otherwise in need. We’re excited to help support their efforts with a percentage of each copy we sell.
  • We also wanted to create a truly indie publishing effort – one that would delight crafters, do some good in our community, and compensate each contributor for her work. It might seem odd, saying that one of our goals was to get paid. But it’s a fact: a whole lot of traditional print publishing these days is based on people contributing projects for free. I’m really proud to show that it can be done differently.

…And just because I’m kinda proud of it, here’s a close-up of my contribution. This tree is made with just thread and fabric stiffener. It’s hollow inside, so the tree lights shine through it. I can’t wait to hang these on my tree soon!

You can find the book right over here.
