Two Hanukkah Crafts

07 Dec 2009

I guess I should say that my family is not Jewish - but as it happens, Mom and I both have Hannukah crafts on the web today.

Aren't these star ornaments amazing? Mom made them with cardboard, pins, and yarn scraps. She has a beautifully-presented tutorial on her blog, if you want to learn to make them.

(Incidentally, see the photo at the bottom of this post to see how they look in other colors.)

...And I have a tutorial for this Very Simple Menorah on CRAFT. It's a decoupage project, using ordinary colored tissue paper. I love how the light shines through!

I may be biased, but I think my Mom is a freaking genius.

Wow, your mom is sooo cool!

These are fantastic, both of you are very talented! Thanks so much for sharing!

Nooooooo!!!!! You, YOU are the genius in this family!

Your Menorah is just beautiful. I love the colors and the way you have placed them from green to blue to pink. I bet it is also lovely during the day sitting in a window with the light passing through the "colored" glass.

Your mom is a freaking genius! And clearly you have inherited much of her awesome crafty smarts!

I love the ornaments! FYI though, the Star of David is two triangles, not two squares. The 8 pointed star is a pretty common Islamic design. I'm not a religion expert so there could be more but... Anyways, I really love it!

That's a good point, Lala. Thanks for sharing it. I'm pretty sure
Mom's intention was to cast the design for several different winter
holidays by making it in various colorways, but you're right - those
iconographic details are very important in religious traditions.

i think your mom is a genius too! and needless to say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. :)
