Guess What! MORE Vintage Christmas Awesome!

Even more McCall’s! This one, from 1979. We’re getting closer to the 80’s all the time…

Be careful – don’t look directly into that wreath. It could hurt your eyes.

Look into this one instead!

I’ve always loved these yarn-painted ornaments. What a cool way to use up yarn scraps!

And this is freaking amazing! It’s a gnome house, sewn in the shape of a hollow tree.

It opens up to reveal a whole interior. Isn’t that crazy-cool? I need to make one – for no reason other than I had to go through my whole childhood without one.

And, oddly enough, more latch-hook stockings. Huh.

Another entry for the Exasperated, Crochet-Covered Baby Museum! Clearly, it’s getting to be time to make that website.

We’re not done yet! Tomorrow… Macrame!

  • Oh my gosh...there has been 2 projects that I have been searching for and I never thought I'd find either one. But you just posted one...Home Sweet Gnome. Now I at least I know what publication it is from. Can I ask you...does the issue actually give instructions inside or was it a mail away for instructions?
Thank you so much .....and I so enjoy your blog!

Hi, Suki - this issue unfortunately didn't give the pattern or
instructions for that gnome house. It had you send away for a
pamphlet. Sadly, too, McCall's is out of print now. Sure wish I had
    better news!
  • Oh that is such sad news :0(
But I guess it would still be possible for me to work it out since you have posted the pics. I only had a vague memory of it and you have given me a lot more now, thanks again.

OMG! I had that macrame book back in the 70's! I made the "JOY" project. Wow...that brings back some memories. Good ones!
  • Ana
so what issue is the gnome pattern in? I need to buy it so I can sew this.
  • SisterDiane
Ana, it was the Winter 1979 issue. The pattern itself was apparently
in a separate leaflet you needed to send away for. The magazine itself
is no longer in publication, sadly.
  • I've got this magazine! and the one from the last post - can't believe I've kept them all this time, am I showing my age or what!
I actually made that wreath with the carol singers, but never quite got around to tackling the gnome house

GNOME HOUSE! Is that the most awesome thing you've ever seen OR WHAT?! AHHHHHHHHHH!
  • SisterDiane
    I know, right???
  • Pearliepie
That gnome house is every kind of cool! I want one.
  • Debbie
I like the mexican yarn craft. I use yarn like that in some pieces when I make art quilts, like how that looks for ornaments.

  • SisterDiane
Ooh, that sounds like a beautiful application! I'd love to see your quilting.
  • I have been too lazy to type in my blog site, so will put that in this posting, so you can see the items I make.

I was going to email you a picture of a little pillow I used yarn on, but it is a no replay mail.
  • SisterDiane
Hmmm...Craftypod AT deepideas DOT com should be working fine - maybe try that email address?
  • Sorka
I like that bunting!! It;s cute!!
  • kim
I want a gnome tree house too!!! So BAD! Are there any tricks to making it?
  • digibudi
Hi Diane! I was thinking yesterday, how nice the vintage Christmas posts were on Craftypod.. et voila, I'm happy to see you're posting those treasures again! Have a great Holiday Season! xoxoxoxo
  • That baby doesn't look exasperated, he looks like he's going to eat the artificial snow. Loving all the retro crafty goodness this week :)
  • jan_o
Oh, I love all these pix of Vintage Magazines. You're making me feel old, though. I got married in 1979!
  • SisterDiane
    I feel old, too!
  • Oh i do hope the macrame will include a hammock...although I guess that's not very holiday-ey is it? hm.
  • Arghhh! My heart is pounding with excitement to have a go at making that Gnome house! I have too much already on my plate for Christmas gifts, but my youngest is turning three in march and I vow to give it a go, because it'll blow her mind. I love your vintage mag posts. Love em!
