Giveaway Week, Day 5: I Love Patchwork

by Sister-Diane on January 1, 2010

in Craft Books

Update: This drawing is now closed. Congratulations to Deedles, the winner of this book!

Happy 2010, everyone! Let’s wrap up this week of giveaways, shall we?

Our last prize up for grabs is a copy of Rashida Coleman-Hale’s I Love Patchwork. It’s definitely visually reminiscent of Japanese craft books.

The project set is pretty, in that minimalist-meets-designer-fabric style many crafters like. (You can see more projects over here (scroll down).

Like many modern craft books, a lot of the project instructions here are expressed in text form only, so I Love Patchwork is probably best for people who already have some sewing skills.

If you’d like to enter to win, just leave a comment here and answer this question:

What one thing are you proudest of when you look back on 2009?

I’ll draw a winner at random on Sunday, January 3rd. C’mon in, international readers! And, Good Luck, y’all…

I am proudest of my beautiful new family. The way my husband was in the delivery room. The way I handled myself during labor. My precious new boy, who loves his mother and father dearly!
  • The one thing that I am *most* proud of is being a mum, not very crafty, but I would say that being a mum is the most creative job you will ever have. Creative in the way you deal with tantrums, accidents and working with resources. Some of my most crafty things have been because I have needed something and I took up the crafty challenge.

I hope I am not too late for this giveaway! I missed out on ordering a signed copy of the book for christmas :(

I am proud for organizing my sewing space. It is a very small corner in our living room and I am ready to sew! I have already made a few things, curtains for the kids room. I made my son a bag to put his cars in and I made my daughter a few fabric baskets. I made Barbie pajamas and I don't know why, but I making more outfits. (I didn't realize how hard it would be...)
  • Heather

... that we continue to provide a safe and structured environment for the children in our community who need a home for the ninth year in a row, despite some rather tough personal circumstances as well as actually finishing half a quilt, woo-hoo.
  • RoseFineCraftGuilddotcom
I'm most proud of actually taking the plunge and moving to Rome, Italy, and live in the sun and off our blog incomes. It's still a tat 'scary' but we're here now: onwards and forwards.

And thank you for the give away.

I am most proud about giving birth to my daughter~
  • catrionabrinkley
I felt very proud when watching my two oldest children in their school play. My son was a beautiful green frog and my daughter was Cinderella. She brought tears to my eyes when she sang a duet that I hadn't heard her practise.
  • Joan
I'm so grateful and proud that I was able to remain an independent contractor (i do theatre costume crafts) for the whole of 2009. This year was rough for everyone, but we made it!

Being told I am a good teacher by a veteran teacher/coworker whose opinion I value and respect.

Sewing-wise, I was amazed and astounded that I made almost $1000 at my last craft show! We really need new doors on our old house, and I'm glad my "hobby" will help pay for some of them.
  • I am most proud of my husband and I opening our own aquarium shop in our hometown. We finally did it!!

  • Kristy
I am proudest of starting my own local tv show. It's called "Its Easy Being Green." I show people different ways in which they can be more environmental via eco-crafts and different guests who talk about and show what they do. I am surprised by how many viewers that I have. It's not something that I even thought about doing in 2008.
  • Chrissy
Would love to own this book...thanks for the giveaways this week!

This year I'm most proud of keeping my priorities in order. Between blogging and crafting and taking care of my family, it's easy to get caught up in my own ambitions. I am very proud of myself for putting my family first and keeping sight of what's most important.
  • auroraannwoods

I am proud of US - the voters of this country - for electing a black president. I wasn't sure I'd see it in my lifetime. (Now if we can just get over this same-sex marriage phobia...)
  • I could faint from this. Think about what you're doing, woman!!

I just got a new sewing machine for working with my papers, but I may just have to go patchwork.
  • Graduating with majors in Microbiology and Biological Science and a minor in Biomedical Science. Now I just have to do something with said degrees!
  • I am the mother of 7...rather challenging! However, I am pretty proud of how my kids are turning out. My two oldest, who are now in college, both want to pursue "careers" that do not involve high salaries and the accumulation of "stuff" but rather helping those in this world who are less fortunate. I am not opposed to money, per se, but I am so pleased to see that my children have realized that money and possessions are not what real happiness is about.
  • I'm proud of the work I have accomplished in 2009 - I'm writing my thesis and the end is in sight!

Creatively, I am most proud of letting go of my perfectionist tendencies and realizing sometimes good enough is good enough.
  • egdirb
I've started a new job and come through the deepest period of depression of my life. I started 2009 unemployed and unhappy in an area I didn't like. Rather than running home as I've always done in the past I've stayed here and made a life for myself with my partner. This means that when we do leave here we'll be doing it on our own terms.
  • Opening my handmade shop on ETSY was my proudest moment! Thank you for the fabulous giveaway! Happy new year!!
  • Christine
I'm proud of going back to school this fall to get my BA in Graphic Design. And for pulling a 4.0 my first quarter back, after not being in school for three years :)
  • Rebecca
I am proud of jumping through all the immigration hoops needed to come to the US to be with my now-husband. It was such a long and difficult process, but we made it. My visa was issued three weeks before the wedding... I didn't care what the Big Day was like or if people had calligraphied namecards at the reception. All that mattered is that I had the opportunity to marry my best mate and finally start our new life here. We took ourselves and our families (including mine from Sydney) to Vegas for a week full of fun and one hell of an irreverent ceremony. And it's been a super year since!
  • I'm most proud of myself for quitting sugar!

  • MelodyJ
I most proud that I kept my sanity and take I have kept a positive outlook.

I am proudest of the day my husband and I went to Parent/Teacher conferences and got a glowing report on all 3 children academically (all A's; all A's with one B; and all O's - outstanding for Kindergarten) as well as for behavior. We were told by all three of their teachers that it is a real blessing to have each of our children in their classes and how sweet they are. I don't know where they got that from, because neither me or my husband is sweet, but that doesn't keep us from being proud of those 3 awesome kids!

Lovely giveaway - I just love Japanese craft books and this one looks even better since it is Japanese inspired, in English - woo hoo!
  • Bonnita
I taught myself to sew! There's NO stopping me now!
  • TriciaMcC

    Thank you for the chance.
  • I'm proud of doing things that I had been putting off because they scared me - I started a blog, an etsy shop and I made time for myself and my creative endeavors. And I am so happy I did!

    thanks for sharing
  • Jason Millward
I got back into theatre and ended up starring in 5 shows!!
  • michaelhawkins
    I launched craft-news.com!
  • morganewilson
I lost my job and the career I had picked in college...and yet didn't really view it as a huge loss but as a new and exciting beginning.
  • wendymartin
I am the most proud of my daughter for working hard and graduating from college this past spring. She is such a talented, intelligent young woman.
  • nicolemaki
I lost 40 pounds and managed to run my family honorably while dealing with major health problems.
  • I love Rashida's blog and I really want to get my hands on this book! My proudest accomplishment of 2009 was getting a prestigious fellowship to support me for a year of dissertation writing and submitting the first two chapters of my diss. I am really looking forward to my proudest moment of 2010 -- finishing it!

P.S. I love this question -- it's so interesting and inspiring to see what other folks are proud of.
  • vickivictoria26
I'm proud of making it back up from a difficult place I was in after having a premature baby in October 2008. And I'm proud of where I'm at with my blog and excited to grow it and improve it more in 2010!
  • I'm proud that I taught myself to sew after receiving a sewing machine for Christmas last year. Sewing has become an extremely rewarding outlet for me!
  • caednkat
That despite the stress in our lives I made the choice to be happy. I found that just doing that I was the happiest I had been in years. Even though on paper I had no reason to be.
  • Debbie St. Germain
That is a tough one, I am not a pride kind of person.
I would have to say, being firm with my daughter and making her stand on her own, even though that is hard for a mom to do, sometimes;)

    Debbie
  • wintu nancy
I am proud of the fact that I have dug out enough blackberry vines and vinca to make my garden area 4 times bigger! Didn't get nearly the sewing done that I wanted, but you can't have it all.
  • Tish
I'm definitely most proud of teaching my daughter's daddy how to embroider. He even ended up stitching a portrait of me for Christmas!
  • janisS
I've been taking care of my aging parents full time this last year. It's not easy and I miss doing things and going places (like going to see my grandbabies in other states), but I wouldn't change a thing. I'm proud of myself for making that decision.
  • I'm proud of finally deciding to study art, no matter how impractical it may seem.
  • i'm proud of the new friends i made and the old ones i kept in 2009 -- they helped me survive a year with a husband in afghanistan! i'm also proud of learning many new things, including sewing my first real garments, and for running several races (including a personal "race" 15 miles long!).
  • Rhiannon
That I went back to school. I've completed my first term and I handed everything in on time!

I'm most proud of leaving a terrible but stable job.
  • kkimberly
Oh wow, this book looks amazing! Okay so what am I most proud of... going to have to be my blog, I really didn't know I could be so productive and it has given me something positive and fun to concentrate on in life.
  • Sarah
Getting married to the man of my dreams.
he is the most kindest and gentlest man ever.
He also has ADHD, so my mother disagrees.

Therefore, I stood up for someone and something I believed in.
  • Christine T
I'm most proud of my wonderful children and how well they coped with a lot of changes in their lives in 2009.
  • Uuuum, one thing? That has to be that I have done a total lifestyle makeover - working out 3 times a week and totally changed my diet. Happy new health to me:-)
  • Alissa
I'm proud that my husband and I have found a way to deal with a hard layoff. I'm also proud that we were able to get pregnant with our first baby even with the layoff. (Who knows, maybe leverage both of those to have a stay at home dad in 2010?)
  • teacherre
I am proud of getting all four of my children through school. I still have 2 in college but getting everyone through high school was a big deal. My husband and I did some high fives on graduation day!
  • I'm most proud of giving birth to my son!
  • maria_jose
Apart of being proud of my two boys, the sweetest kids of all over Barcelona (ole!), I'm proud of going back to work after a mommy stint of almost 5 years, and that I work for a yarn company. Being a knitter this is close to a dream!
  • I think taking the time to teach myself new things. In between all the real life issues that take over at times, it was nice to be able to sit & teach myself something like crochet & take time out to make some toys & things.
  • Ellynz
oh what a lovely book! I've eyed that one up but not bought it. Destiny? Maybe. Most proud of? I finally officially registered my company name, published 2 sewing patterns and sold them to local craft stores! I can't believe I finally did it! Hope to keep the momentum going this year.
  • LisaRasche
I just discovered your podcast (and website) today and listened to your December 13th podcast with your mother, tears in my eyes. My mother is 97, and our days of crafting together are done, due to some mini-strokes and other health problems. She is a fiercely independent woman who ran her own used-car lot in the '50s, her own bookkeeping service in the 60's and 70's, as well as an antique store. Her father began weaving on an old Union loom, and taught his girls as well. I grew up weaving, sewing, embroidering, and any other craft that caught our fancy. We would watch The Frugal Gourmet together and make notes in our matching cookbooks. My children (teens, now) weave, cook, sew, and craft with me, but I miss being able to bounce ideas off my mom, and have a weaving day together, or do all the Christmas baking together. Treasure your mother. The years go by too quickly.
  • MovingMama
Moving overseas with a 6 week old baby!
  • I'm most proud of not attaching myself to the outcome of things, but enjoying the process. I stopped sewing and all forms of making when I got frustrated as a kid. Because a lot of things come easy to me, once they got hard, I just moved on to something else. In the last couple of years I've gone back to what excited and engaged me when I was younger. This year, I started little by little to work through roadblocks and learned to love figuring out the next step.
  • My blog, without a doubt. I have found my voice, and I am really pleased that some people want to listen to it!
  • SallyOD
I taught myself how to make bags/purses. Really great fun and received quite a few compliments on the finished items. Love to win this book!
  • I think it has to be all the hard work I did, turning my craft business into a proper career and being able to support my family doing what I love - culminating in being able to take 3 weeks off over Christmas and New Year to spend with my family. It's a lovely feeling to look back on a year and feel proud, and excited about the year to come x
  • I'm proud that we survived the year as a family...and still like each other lol.

I'm also proud of the number of quilts I've finished. Also, how my skills have improved over the year.
  • Building the confidence to start making videos for my blog, even with me speaking in them. (a huge thing for me)
  • karrenhiskey
I am proud that I have gone back to school to study art and finished a semester as a full time student and I did great!
  • Thanks for the book giveaway! I'm very proud that I overcame my fear of rejection in 2009 and started selling my own crochet patterns and giant fruit soft toys on Etsy and Ravelry. And it's going better than expected! It has given me a lot of self-confidence and the boost to keep on designing. Yay!
  • geekxnerd
Telling my parents and my husband that I got my current job - the "dream job." That was an amazing moment.
  • Kirstin Juul
I would have to say the work that I did as a child care director. Working at a center that helped low income children and their parents. It was a challenge yet everyday I learned something new and exciting, that ultimately changed my career focus from child care to social work.
  • Putting myself "out there" by writing seriously online. Once I took the big plunge last January, I realized how much I love doing it.... Now that I look back, I don't know what took me so long.
  • My family. My daughter turned one and my son was born on the 7th December. They complete me.
  • clairevoskuhl
I'm proudest of the quilt I finished from my brother-in-law's silk ties. He died several years ago and I made the quilt as a surprise for his wife. She was thrilled. I think it turned out quite elegantly.
  • Jenni
I think my proudest achievement in 2009 was putting my fears behind me to get things "done". In 2009 I married the love of my life, I found work, and I immigrated to the United States. I'm proud of myself for not trying to run away from commitment, responsibility, and difficult times.
  • I am most proud of overcoming my break-up with my ex. It was hard on me, on him, and on all those around us. He was my first in everything (at the age of 26 - I'm a huge late bloomer) and I thought my world was ending. But, I overcame it and am in a new relationship with a wonderful man who is so much better for me, and with whom I want to spend the rest of my life with.
  • I'm pretty proud of the fact that my 3 year daughter and I have spent a lot of crafty time together this year. She is really so creative, and it's been a fun way to connect with her. I hope it continues for many, many years!
  • I think my blog is my proudest acheivement in 2009. I mean, I have many more aceivements, but to have been able to keep up the work for more than a year was very important for me. And being able to give readers a different view (positive) of the customs here in Mexico was very good.
  • Liz
that's an easy one! i'm far and away proudest of all i have accomplished on making my house much MUCH more liveable...it was in terrible shape when i bought it, 11/18/08. 5 rooms down, 6 to go...some yard down, lots to go...maybe i'll head to ikea today. :D the other thing is that i survived a foot injury that lasted for 10 months, and i was severely limited in my activity level for those months. i'm proud i survived that with my sanity intact!
