Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

A little snapshot from the Craft Social…

A Snapshot from the Craft Social from Diane Gilleland on Vimeo.

So, just in case you missed the Craft Social event on Twitter today (or you aren’t on Twitter), I thought I’d share this little video shapshot of what it was like. (There’s a larger frame version here.

Quite. A. Ride. Kind of like a huge crafty slumber party. (And I should mention: when I took this video, we’d had over 1500 tweets posted to the event. By the time we wrapped up, we were closer to 2000.)

Barbara and I can’t wait for next month’s Craft Social! Watch the website (and our Twitter feeds) for more details soon.

And, many many thanks to all the crafters who made this such a great time. If you were there, and have any suggestions as to what you’d like to see in this event next time, please chime in in the comments!

  • Wow, you kept chatting AND did a video at the same time? Cool girl! It was like being at huge party – I felt thirsty and tired afterwards, like I'd been talking for a few hours… :-)

Augh! I totally misread the time zone! Sorry I missed it. Can't wait for next month :)

  • SisterDiane

Heh heh – yeah, I missed about a hundred tweets while making that one-
    minute video!

Thanks so much for joining us today, Hanna! I still missed seeing your
embroidery project. Any chance you'll post your photo to the Flickr
    group?

  • SisterDiane

Oh, no! We'll have next month's scheduled soon. I hope you can make it!

  • Wowee! Such an inspiring way to spend the morning; of course I spent the whole afternoon making things and putting together envelopes of goodies to mail out. Thanks so much for organizing and herding everyone together; it was great.

  • SisterDiane

    Awesome! Thanks for joining us!

I have to admit that I found it overwhelming. If I tried to jump in, I got so far behind on the tweets and whatever I thought I might be commenting on was long gone. Because of the way my brain works, I would have preferred some structure- like a question and then 10 minutes of answers, next question…
The BIG plus- Lots of people started following me afterward- and I followed back, so it was a great way to find new and interesting people!

  • mimik

Oh, and I've been thinking it would have been a great way to discus the Japanese vs US craft book question!

  • SisterDiane

    Indeed it would, Mimi!

We're definitely thinking about more focused discussions for the
future Craft Socials. We weren't sure how this format would play out,
so we thought it was safest to make the first one a more freewheeling
“howdy” type conversation. And it ended up being lots of fun.

That said, I don't think there is a way to completely focus a Twitter
discussion like you're describing. Regardless of any topic we put out
there, the space will always contain lots of side-conversations. It's
just the nature of Twitter – and, it's a sign that people are meeting
each other and exchanging ideas. So I think it's safe to expect that
future Craft Socials will look at least somewhat like yesterday.

I agree, there were times when it was a challenge to keep up – and
this is because so many wonderful people were there, participating! A
    very good problem to have…

  • mimik

I have never seen or participated in anything like it before so have nothing to base my suggestions on- just blowing off thoughts I guess. I am very excited to see such a cool thing happening and whatever way it works itself out, I'll be there :-)
