Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Blogging Ebook #3: What do you want in there?

So, my friends, I’m getting ready to produce the third ebook in my blogging series. And because I’m producing it for you, I wanted your input.

I see this title as a kind of “Craft Blogging 102.” It’ll go beyond the subjects we covered in Making a Great Blog and Creating a Blog Audience. Here are some of the subjects I want to include:

  • Moving from a free blog to a hosted blog
  • Understanding how a reader sees your blog
  • Copyright and blogging
  • Advertising and other forms of monetization
  • Organizing and re-leveraging your body of blogging work as it grows
  • Managing your blog categories as your blog grows
  • How your responsibilities as a blogger change as your blog audience grows

…But that’s just my list. What subjects would you like to see?

Leave your comments and suggestions here, and I’ll do my best to incorporate them all into this ebook. I want it to be super useful for intermediate and advanced bloggers.

Thank you!

I love the list already! I feel like there are other things I need to know … but if I knew what they were, I wouldn't need to ask. :/ I hope these suggestions aren't too lame … maybe they'll get someone else thinking of better stuff:

OK! What about time/task management to make sure you're at least doing *something* about all the important things. I mean, if there were infinite time, you could spend all of it just on answering comments. Maybe you could outline the big task areas and strategies for tackling them with limited time.

Dealing with nasty commenters (aka trolls) or copyright thieves, or other problem people.

Off-line and non-obvious ways to get people to your blog.

What your governing hierarchy should be once you acheive Crafty World Takeover

  • I listened to your podcast with your mum on it (again… lovely listening whilst sewing) and Ireally like the idea of planning your blog posts. It certainly helps to keep you focused. Your posting on google reader was a revelation to me too. I didn't know you could do half of the stuff you can do with it. I find I am drawn to blogs with a certain 'look' to them and I'm currently trying to define exactly what it is but I know I pass by a lot of blogs thats aren't visually appealing – even if the content is ok sometimes. I really dislike the ones that are all ads and you have to navigate your way to any meaningful post – only to find you have clicked on an ad in the process! Guess thats why they do it … but I dont go back to these blogs!

These are GREAT suggestions, Alice! Thank you so much for chiming in!

I definitely need a section on trolls. And I really like the time
management from a broader scale like that.

As to the governing hierarchy, I was pretty much planning to copy
yours when you achieved your Crafty World Takeover. :-)

  • SisterDiane

Thank you so much, Tracey! I see what you mean – a chapter on some
visual organization and design principles would be good.

I'm so happy you found the Google Reader video helpful!

  • I like your ideas so far Diane, as well as those in others' comments. I am particularly intrigued by “Organizing and re-leveraging your body of blogging work as it grows” – that sounds like it would be super-helpful!

  • I love your blog & have awarded your blog with a Sunshine Award, which is for blogs that inspire positivity and creativity.

  • SisterDiane

Thank you so much, Chrissy! You've made my day!

  • miriamatmaderightguide

Sister Diane – You have read my mind! I was just getting the day started thinking I would send a request to you about writing up a little something about advertising and monetization. I can't wait to get this book!

Also, I'd love to hear a few words on a creating a blogging calendar (like when to start writing about Holidays, or that January is a good time to post about organization.) Oh, and I'd really appreciate some recommendations for books/resources for blogging code – I'm struggling customizing my blog.

  • SisterDiane

Thanks, Miria – those are great suggestions. Code is definitely a
subject bloggers need to dive into as their blogs grow.

Plus, it's super fun!! (Okay, I am kidding there.) :-)

  • shanknits

I am definitely interested in advertising and monetizing, copyrights, and increasing readership.

  • tortagialla

Would definitely like to know more about advertising and forms of monetization…getting out there a bit more.

  • SisterDiane

Thank you, Linda! Definitely there's lots to say on that subject.

  • SisterDiane

I talked quite a bit about building your audience in Creating a Great Blog. Tell me, what specifics are you interested in?

  • GenevieveCrabe

Hi Diane… I haven't finished reading your other books, but I am interested in copyright issues, monetizing and handling spam comments.

  • SisterDiane

Many thanks, Genevieve – those I can deliver! :-)

  • sandyalamode

Oh wow I can't wait to see the post! I am new to blogging so there is a lot I need to learn and all of topics would be super useful. One thing I'd be interested in seeing is the difference between all the ways to monetize, like ads, GoogleAds on your site, etc. Also, any ways to increase readership would be great as well!

  • SisterDiane

Sandy, if you like, you can get a lot of info on how to increase your readership in my ebook, Creating a Blog Audience. It covers that subject in detail.

  • SisterDiane

Excellent – will do. Thank you, Genevieve!
