Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

A new ebook from my Mom: (Not So) Sweets

This is a particularly awesome ebook release, because my Mom wrote it!

Mom is an amazing cook and baker. I grew up blessed with homemade cakes and cookies and cream puffs. But I developed hypoglycemia in the last few years, and had to eliminate white sugar from my diet.

So Mom embarked on an odyssey of recipe-tweaking and figured out how to make low-sugar or no-sugar versions of some of my favorite desserts. And the results are in this ebook, (Not So) Sweets! (It’s the latest release from the still-fledgling-but-getting-there CraftyPod Publishing.)

Mom did a bang-up job on this project (all filial bias aside). She did all the photography, stepped out all the recipes so they’re completely clear, and even wrote super-helpful chapters about the ins and outs of low-sugar baking.

I know from experience, it’s not easy to convert recipes to low-sugar versions. Sugar serves so many important functions in recipes, you really have to know your stuff (and experiment endlessly) to arrive at a finished version that tastes good.

I was one of a small army of taste-testers on these recipes, so I can tell you straight up: they’re delicious, and you never even miss the sugar. Those cream puffs, in particular, are the bomb-diggety. As is that mousse. It’s not easy to get a low-sugar chocolate flavor, but Mom did it. (How do I reach those Nobel people, again?)

If you know someone with sugar issues, or just want to make treats with less sugar, check it out!

  • Holy Canoli, This is perfect. This is great timing for me, too, as I’m trying to cut down on sugar. (It’s giving me headaches.)

    Congrats on another Craftypod coup!

Wait a minute! Wait a minute! I don't see where you mentioned my editor, Diane, who went through every recipe, every step, every sentence to make certain that what I had written made sense and was presented clearly.

And my book designer, Diane, wasn't mentioned either! Nor anything said about the fact that she was given a bunch of recipes and a bunch of photos and some text and, using her magical powers turned them all into this beautiful book! She did a spectacular job of lay out and presentation.

And then I have also noticed that my publisher, Diane, was overlooked! If it weren't for her e-book publishing skills – this book would have never happened!

This little e-book, begun out of a mother's desire to find a way to make sugar free and low sugar treats for her daughter, is really the result of a happy collaboration to which Diane contributed a whole lot more than her position as “first taster”! Believe it!

    This looks really good!

  • Wow–this looks fabulous! The photos are gorgeous. I can't get over how talented your mom is. Wonderful job!

  • SisterDiane

Two weeks! Yaaaaaaay! I hope you two have a lovely time together!

  • SisterDiane

Heh – oh, yeah. That. :-)

    (Thanks, Mom!)

  • SisterDiane

She is utterly amazing, to be sure!

  • SisterDiane

Thanks for ordering a copy Genevieve! I'd love to know how your hubby
    likes the recipes!

  • Beeeeautiful photos, you both did a great job I can tell already! :-)

  • kitler

Wow! This book looks great – your mom is soooo talented! May I ask, does she reduce sugar by substituting with chemical sweeteners (i.e. sweet-n-low, splenda) or natural sugar substitutes (blue agave, stevia)? My brother is hypoglycemic, but also has a sensitivity to many chemical sweeteners (among other things!).

  • SisterDiane

Hi, Katie – Mom substitutes Splenda for white sugar, and in some
cases, retains a minute amount of brown sugar to help the texture of
certain recipes. You can find more details if you click through to the
    ebook page.

This ebook looks -amazing-, Diane & Pam! :-D And so GOOD!

Even thought I don't have hypoglycemia, theses recipes looks amazing for someone who wants to reduce sugar in their everyday meals. (Like, ahem, me. :-p) I'm really curious on how theses will taste.

The pictures and the design of the ebook is awesome! Diane, I'm guessing you did the design by yourself. You used very interesting fonts and details, you're really getting better at this, congrats! :-)

  • SisterDiane

Aw, thanks, Fanie – that compliment means a great deal coming from
you. Yup, I did the design/layout on this one. With practice, we
    improve… :-)

  • It is really, really lovely. You did a fantastic job on the layout and design Diane. And I'm sure without even trying them the recipes are going to be fantastic. I don't think we have Splenda here but I'll look into it so I can try those brownies!

  • SisterDiane

If you can't find the Splenda, Joanie, we will ship you some :-)

  • Obzie

I've been hypoglycemic since childhood, and I thought this book would be the answer for me. Alas, the recipes use splenda. I guess I'll keep looking.

  • SisterDiane

Sorry it wasn't a good fit for you.
