Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Join the Bronte-Along, won’t you?

I wanted to share something lovely I’m participating in these days. Maybe you’re a fan of the hoop-skirt and the brooding hero, too?

Recently, Melissa Averinos watched a BBC production of Jane Eyre (which is freaking amazing, by the way). She quickly became a bit obsessed with Jane, and so she joined forces with Beth Dunn to create a crafty celebration of this book and others by the Bronte Sisters.

The Bronte-Along was born!

This community reading/crafting group is open to all. If you like your epic romances, just visit this page for all the details. You can read the book itself, or watch any of the many film adaptations.

And then, create something crafty based on the story! This page links to everyone who’s participating, and there’s some lovely embroidery and crochet in progress already.

(And Melissa has been drawing and painting – but you can see those at the Bronte-Along Flickr Group.)

I don’t know what I’ll make yet, but I’m totally loving this project! Once we’re through Jane Eyre, we’ll do Wuthering Heights, and later, some Austen!

How cute…I am such a sucker for epic romances and victorian type novels…watched all those BBC series. Hehe…addictive!

  • SisterDiane

Heh! Yup, give me a tousle-haired Mr. Darcy or Mr. Rochester any
    day. :-)

  • I love these types of novels… as I was reading I though hmm… sounds fun. Then you said Austen and I immediately thought… I'm in! (I am totally obsessed with J.A.) But I suppose… I should check out all the links before I “jump in”.

  • SisterDiane

Loves me some Austen, too! Which is your favorite?

  • Jane Eyre is my favourite book – EVER! I’ve read it at least ten times :-) Thanks for posting about this Sister Diane – I’m glad Melissa is linking up crafting with the book. I’m inspired to make something now too!

  • Top favorite Emma (which I know some people feel is her fluffier work, but I just love it). Then Pride and Prejudice (but it’s a close tie). I’m also equal parts intrigued and heartbroken by Sanditon. Every time I read it I get sucked in by “what was she going to do with this” thoughts and end up so sad that we’ll never know.

    What about you?

  • This sounds so fun!
I absolutely love Jane Austen. I’m always reading Pride and Prejudice. I could read and watch it a million times…never gets old! How I wish we could all just time warp into some of those novels!
That’s it. I have to try to make time for this one!

Oh fun! Yes, Austen would be great too! I will never forget watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice in my British Lit class. That was my introduction to one of my celebrity boyfriends, Colin Firth! Wait…what was the story about…? :P

  • SisterDiane

Wait… Colin is also my celebrity boyfriend, and my Mom's too! Well, he's a busy man… :-)

  • SisterDiane

Seriously… I would time warp in anytime! The clothes, the manners, the pastoral English countryside. Swoon!

  • SisterDiane

I adore Persuasion, followed by Sense and Sensibility. Although I go on an Austen binge once every couple years and read them all back to back. Oddly, I have never gotten around to reading Sandition, though. I really need to do that.

  • geekxnerd

Oh that's alright…we can share. I am a busy woman! My multiple celebrity boyfriends include, Colin Firth, Ira Glass and John Cusack circa late 1980's to late 1990's. Don't even get me started on dance celebrity boyfriends…

  • yes! join the brontealong — it's super fun (and thanks for the link, sister diane!). jane eyre is my favorite, and i love tenant of wildfell hall (by anne bronte), but i just haven't gotten into wuthering heights *ever*. and jane austen — how could you go wrong? megacrafty, you've inspired me to go back and reread sanditon — i haven't in years.
also, anyone wanting to branch out a bit, give both elizabeth gaskell and wilkie collins a try. you won't be sorry!

  • SisterDiane

Ooh, will do – thanks, Meghan!

  • Okay, this is SO out of my area of obsessiveness that I am not sure I'm up to this challenge, but I must admit, you all make it look like something I want to dive into.
