CraftyPod Videoblog #1 from Diane Gilleland on Vimeo.

When I start spending time exploring new things on the internet, it always gets dangerous.

K has been introducing me to a whole bunch of new content on YouTube recently, and this got me all hopped up to start my own videoblog.

(Do I actually have time for such an endeavor? We’ll find out. Sometimes, new ideas are just more compelling than rational thought.)

Anyway – here’s the first installment – a project intro of sorts. Let me know what you think!

  • I finally watched it :)
Can't wait for the next one! Your hair looks great!
  • SisterDiane
HAHA! Thank you! New one goes up tomorrow!
  • Yesssss!!!!!! Thank you for all that you do! I have learned so much, and your podcast has given me a very important element of what to do after you've gone through the design/ build (in my case) process ...COURAGE! You gotta have it to put yourself out there! You are awesome...I look forward to more videos.
  • Oh I love this!! I think people will definitely "connect" better when they see the real you (by the way, I love the hair). I totally agree that the biggest reason I blog and peruse the internet is to connect to all the fabulous craftiness out there (and the gardening/health people)!
I have lots of homework to do, but since Sister Diane told me to go and make something, I'm going to go and make some pins that I've been wanting to make for my sister. My arm didn't need much twisting to craft instead of do homework!! ;)

  • SisterDiane
Heh - anytime I can provide rationalization to craft instead of working, I am there. :-)
  • eileenhull
Sister Diane, you look fabulous! Can't wait to hear more about you at Laura's class next week :-) Great videoblog!
  • SisterDiane
Thank you! I'm looking forward to getting to know you better, too!
  • geekxnerd
YAY! It's you...talking to meeeeeeeee! I love it. And I laughed so hard when you laughed after committing to a bi-weekly video, HAHAHA
  • Sister Diane!!!!!!,
    This is great
    very dynamic and interactive
Yes!! I think your video rocks too
Wow I cannot wait to se more of this project
    Wish you the best
  • futuregirl
Um, 192 comments?! Holy crap! I'm not the only one that thinks your video rocks! Very awesome, Diane!
  • I just recently found your website and podcasts and I love them. I think the video is fun and a great idea. I agree with you, there is something wrong with everything being perfect in blogland. Don't get me wrong, I like good photos- but it's almost too over the top and superficial.
  • I think this is a great idea :D i really like your first vid (what editing software did you use?)
  • SisterDiane
Thank you! I'm suing iMovie, which is somewhat basic, but very easy to learn. Eventually, I'd love to graduate to Final Cut.
  • SisterDiane
HAHAHAH! Or, "using iMovie." Last thing I would ever do is sue Apple for anything. :-)
  • Laure
Diane, I think that I like your video persona even better than your audio persona. I can't wait to see more!
  • You are so adorable! hurrah for your video blog! xoxo
  • Nadia
    Woohoo!
A video blog, that's just too awesome. I do love to see your working space and I'm not bother by clutter, it shows that you work with stuff. Perfection isn't the ideal, like in television where everything is staged and sterile and I don't watch it.
Kind of amazing how much you managed to talk about in only 2 minutes, it felt longer. Great lighting too, one of the most common issues with videos, you look great.
    Pushkin is irresistible. :D
  • SisterDiane
Thanks, Nadia! It is totally amazing, isn't it, how much time can be stretched and squashed in video?
  • StephD
    Seriously awsome!
  • Susan
Hi- I love your pidcast and the longer the better in my opionion. I enjoy them on the road, in the studio or even the kitchen. so keep up the great work.
I also lookforward to your new vidio blog! I often have to load the artist web page or your to see what it is your are talking about( not a problem other than dinner is late-ha). So the vido sounds even more fun and informative.
    Thanks again!
    Susan
  • It's a really interesting idea. You are so right about just sharing the good and the tidy. I am guilty of that on my own Blog. I shall have to imitate your idea and be more honest, showing the muddle I make as I work.
Thanks for the audio blogs, the written blog as well as this video blog. I enjoy reading and listening to all you have to share.
    Best wishes from the UK.
  • SisterDiane
    Thank you so much, Mandy!
  • sometimescrafter
Fantastic! Love it! I think it's great, and now i'll know what you look like if I happen to see you when i'm out and about! ;)
  • wabisabibrooklyn
How exciting! can't wait to see more of these!
  • lol great video!
I love how you did this. very relaxed and cool. Yes wasting time on the internet is me.... I must make something...
  • pam
I love that you are going to blog live and in living color! Great first post, Diane. I especially respond to the relaxed and welcoming nature of the post. You and K are doing a really great job in this new visual blog. I can't wait to watch you make a mess for us!

And I loved seeing my grand child sitting so contentedly in the pool of sunlight - or what has been passing for sunlight up here lately!

Good luck with your new adventure! Can't wait for the next installment!
  • Found your blog today and am very excited to find someone video blogging...great idea, since what is we is sooo visual...will defo check back soon for updates!!!
    Ruth
  • gorgeous and hilarious, naturally. (honestly though, i have trouble keeping up with both audio and video media on the internet! another stick in the mud i guess.)
  • SisterDiane
Not at all! I think different people will resonate with different kinds of media. Thanks for the kind comment!
  • Shanghaicowgirl
Awww yeah. Filling in my CraftyPod withdrawal periods with video too? Awesome.
I'm really looking forward to these videoblogs, and what you said about the perfectionist aspects of craft blogging really resonated with me.
I recently watched an episode of Threadbanger - which is hit and miss for me - sometimes it's awesome, sometimes I think it's not so awesome. I found it curious that Corinne detailed what she did that DIDN'T work and actually showed the unsuccessful attempts as well as providing a tutorial for what did work. Then I saw your mom's post on trying out the coloured podge on jars and then Filth Wizardry post on the trial and error of using plastic bags as iron-on for shirts. I liked that in all of these examples, they just talked about it on par with their successes, instead of the overtly self-depreciating "FAIL" discussion which just hurt my head like a hundred dogs.

Looking forward to seeing the mess and creating some of my own!
  • SisterDiane
I so agree, Shanghaicowgirl - it's great to see more of our collective rough edges coming out. I think there's far more learning potential there than in perfection.
  • jeaniebabbage
What fun! Like with podcasts, I can still work while watching and go back if I didn't get it! Of course hub might get upset that even less housework is getting done, but hey, I'm learning something. Isn't that more important than having clean dishes?
  • Love this idea! So personal and real....love getting to know who I'm 'listening' and talking to and knowing a 'real' person....

The danger is that someday you will be getting video comments....now do you reallly wan tto see the chaos that is MY life? :-)
  • SisterDiane
    Hee hee... yes, I do!
  • kim
I like this - you're funny and fun to watch! I usually show the things that don't turn out on my blog... my kids had started to think that everything I tried was easy for me and always worked out... I wanted them (and others) know that sometimes you have to try and try and try again. I can't wait to see what you videoblog next!
  • SisterDiane
That's an awesome approach to a video blog, Kim! I'll check yours out!
  • This is awesome, Diane! *You're* awesome! I'm so excited by what you're doing I was compelled to blog the reasons why – http://www.kimwerker.com/2010/04/26/sister-diane-started-a-video-blog/.

    Oh, yes. So excited.
  • SisterDiane
OOh, wow - holy hell! Thank you indeed! I used to kind of hate video blogs, but have been seeing some really great ones lately, and took all my cues from them. I will now go send you a very long, link-filled email. :-)
  • Anotheryarn
I'm normally a cranky curmudgeon when it comes to video [in] blogs - just let me read already! But since you are doing this, and your podcast is so wonderfully awesome I will just have to push my stuck-in-the-mud ways and try it out :)
  • SisterDiane
HAHAHAHA! I have shared your feelings up until now, Anotheryarn. We'll just see where this thing goes. I like the writing too much to ever give that kind of blogging up.
  • I love it! Looking forward to following along! You're such a cutie. :)
  • ADearDesign
What a wonderful way to share your wonderful self! I couldn't agree with you more regarding those "picture perfect" blogs. Yet, if I am critical it would sound like I'm jealous, which most of the time would be true. Your podcasts are always such a treat, so I'm thrilled you're doing a videoblog, too. Now I'm going to take your welcomed advice and go make something!
  • dude, you are so pretty!
and i love that bit about wanting to show the messy side of life rather than the glossy perfect facade, as you well know!

hmmmm. am i gonna be inspired to do a video blog now, too? Damn you, Sister Diane!

    xo
  • SisterDiane
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! I want to see a Yummygoods video blog! (And also, I already have a #brontealong mention built into the upcoming Episode 2!)
  • I think I will love it, Diane! You're right, we don't think enough about showing or talking about not "imperfect" things. I once told you I'd be glad to see the gag reels of one of your video tutorials as you said Pushkin seemed to want to be in it, so I join the crowd of those who want gratuitous Pushkin moments! Or not gratuitous, as with all the discussions he must hear in his home, he may, after all, have opinions worth to listen to?
  • SisterDiane
Hee hee... believe me, whenever that cat has an opinion, he makes it known! (Thanks for the kind words - so glad you liked the video!
  • Sorka
    coool!! Nice to see you!!
  • pauloverton
Awesometown! The world needs CraftyPod video! Honestly though, I don't know how you juggle it all. I think I'll nickname you "The Machine" or maybe "The Crafty Terminator". Good luck with the new venture!
  • I like what I see so far and can't wait to watch the next one. Have fun!
  • SisterDiane
WOWEE, y'all - all your kind comments have made an awesome start to this day! Thank you so much for all the great feedback on this new project. I'm so excited to make more videos for you in future! XOXOXOX
  • carolyn
Hi there, I follow your blog and can't wait to see what you come up with for your video's.
  • Sally Hackney
I like the idea of the videoblog. And 2 minutes is great. I guess my attention span is starting to reflect that of my 2 year old grandson. Thanks. Sally
  • GenevieveCrabe
Hey Diane, it's great to see you! I love the idea of the video blog, even though I marvel at how well you can give audio-only instructions for craft projects. Of course, you know we'll be expecting a "How to do your own video blog" course..... OK, OK, I'm getting off the computer and going to make stuff.
  • SisterDiane
HAHAHA! If I ever get any good at this video thing, Genevieve, I'll do that course! :-)
  • pinkyfromfrance
    great idea ! thanks :)
  • You did an awesome job on your first video. I swear we have the same hair right now...darn that grow out period! I can't wait to see your upcoming videos, as I think these videos will be a big hit with the crafting community. Way to go :)
  • Wow, it really did sound as though Pushkin said 'hell yeah!' Welcome to video blogging, Sister Diane - what I like about it is that it can be fairly quick to do. That said, I haven't done one in ages & need to get on it again.
  • SisterDiane
It IS fairly quick, isn't it? Surprisingly so - I kept thinking there must be more to do, but there wasn't. Lots to get used to in this medium....
  • Sounds great! Yet another reason to consider that IPad I've been thinking about.
  • SisterDiane
Anytime I can help someone justify another Apple purchase, I am there! :-)
  • Wow, I really appreciate you taking the time to do this...it's nice to connect voice to face. Although, does it seem like we are turning the internet into TV...except of course interaction and discussions is big difference between watching TV and surfing on the web. I was just thinking about that given some comparisons that have been made about how internet is the new TV...eek! Well, good advice at the end...let me go now! :)
  • SisterDiane
I agree, Linda - I'm fascinated by what's happening over at YouTube right now. There are some channels that offer such articulate and interesting discussion, and are in many ways waaaaaay better than most of what's on network TV right now.

...Although I do worry about what all this means for reading sometimes.
  • There's also the revolution of reading on the kindle and ipad, etc... but I still like the good 'ole paperback and snuggling up to read...will be interesting to see how this all evolves and rolls out...scary and exciting!
  • SisterDiane
Me, too! I think that, over time, all these "new media" channels will sort of shake down into specific kinds of content, delivered for specific kinds of entertainment/use. What a freaking fascinating time to be alive, eh?
  • I agree, it's a fascinating time to be alive...the reach a single person has with the internet...how easy it is to communicate your ideas...crazy cool!
  • Walden121
Very nifty. I like the idea of video blogging.
  • arudolph
    Hi Sister Diane,

Loved the videoblog. It was great to put a face to the voice. Would love to be able to subscribe to the video blog via itunes.
  • SisterDiane
Thank you, arudolph! Once I have a few of these under my belt, and am sure I can keep the project going, I'll set up a iTunes feed and a YouTube channel.
  • craftygoat
Oh, what fun! I've heard your voice in countless podcasts & seen your photo on blogs & tweets. But video just feels more... real. More like a friendly conversation, as you mention. And two minutes is perfect. Would love to see this become a regular thing... as long as you have time and are enjoying it, of course.

Love the gratuitous Pushkin footage, BTW. :-)
  • SisterDiane
HAHA! Gratuitous Pushkin Footage! ...And a new segment for this show is born. :-) (So glad you liked the video! Thanks!)
  • Dorothy
Fantastic, Diane, I love that you're doing video! And I embrace the honesty of your clutter, cause that's how us crafters roll, yo. I'm excited with you!
  • Sharonnz
    yes please was awesome..........
  • I like it :)
  • meg
yes! I can't wait for the next installment!
  • leighanntennant
Lovely! Now we get to experience the sights, not just the sounds, of Sister Diane! Looking forward to seeing (pun intended) where this project takes you!
