Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

…In Which I Start a Videoblog. (Really.)

CraftyPod Videoblog #1 from Diane Gilleland on Vimeo.

When I start spending time exploring new things on the internet, it always gets dangerous.

K has been introducing me to a whole bunch of new content on YouTube recently, and this got me all hopped up to start my own videoblog.

(Do I actually have time for such an endeavor? We’ll find out. Sometimes, new ideas are just more compelling than rational thought.)

Anyway – here’s the first installment – a project intro of sorts. Let me know what you think!

Lovely! Now we get to experience the sights, not just the sounds, of Sister Diane! Looking forward to seeing (pun intended) where this project takes you!

  • meg

yes! I can’t wait for the next installment!

  • Sharonnz

    yes please was awesome……….

  • Dorothy

Fantastic, Diane, I love that you’re doing video! And I embrace the honesty of your clutter, cause that’s how us crafters roll, yo. I’m excited with you!

Oh, what fun! I’ve heard your voice in countless podcasts & seen your photo on blogs & tweets. But video just feels more… real. More like a friendly conversation, as you mention. And two minutes is perfect. Would love to see this become a regular thing… as long as you have time and are enjoying it, of course.

Love the gratuitous Pushkin footage, BTW. :-)

    Hi Sister Diane,

Loved the videoblog. It was great to put a face to the voice. Would love to be able to subscribe to the video blog via itunes.

Very nifty. I like the idea of video blogging.

  • Wow, I really appreciate you taking the time to do this…it’s nice to connect voice to face. Although, does it seem like we are turning the internet into TV…except of course interaction and discussions is big difference between watching TV and surfing on the web. I was just thinking about that given some comparisons that have been made about how internet is the new TV…eek! Well, good advice at the end…let me go now! :)

  • Sounds great! Yet another reason to consider that IPad I’ve been thinking about.

  • Wow, it really did sound as though Pushkin said ‘hell yeah!’ Welcome to video blogging, Sister Diane – what I like about it is that it can be fairly quick to do. That said, I haven’t done one in ages & need to get on it again.

  • You did an awesome job on your first video. I swear we have the same hair right now…darn that grow out period! I can’t wait to see your upcoming videos, as I think these videos will be a big hit with the crafting community. Way to go :)

  • I think I will love it, Diane! You’re right, we don’t think enough about showing or talking about not “imperfect” things. I once told you I’d be glad to see the gag reels of one of your video tutorials as you said Pushkin seemed to want to be in it, so I join the crowd of those who want gratuitous Pushkin moments! Or not gratuitous, as with all the discussions he must hear in his home, he may, after all, have opinions worth to listen to?

  • dude, you are so pretty!
and i love that bit about wanting to show the messy side of life rather than the glossy perfect facade, as you well know!

hmmmm. am i gonna be inspired to do a video blog now, too? Damn you, Sister Diane!

    xo

What a wonderful way to share your wonderful self! I couldn’t agree with you more regarding those “picture perfect” blogs. Yet, if I am critical it would sound like I’m jealous, which most of the time would be true. Your podcasts are always such a treat, so I’m thrilled you’re doing a videoblog, too. Now I’m going to take your welcomed advice and go make something!

  • I love it! Looking forward to following along! You’re such a cutie. :)

  • Anotheryarn

I’m normally a cranky curmudgeon when it comes to video [in] blogs – just let me read already! But since you are doing this, and your podcast is so wonderfully awesome I will just have to push my stuck-in-the-mud ways and try it out :)

  • pinkyfromfrance

    great idea ! thanks :)

  • GenevieveCrabe

Hey Diane, it's great to see you! I love the idea of the video blog, even though I marvel at how well you can give audio-only instructions for craft projects. Of course, you know we'll be expecting a “How to do your own video blog” course….. OK, OK, I'm getting off the computer and going to make stuff.

  • Sally Hackney

I like the idea of the videoblog. And 2 minutes is great. I guess my attention span is starting to reflect that of my 2 year old grandson. Thanks. Sally

  • carolyn

Hi there, I follow your blog and can't wait to see what you come up with for your video's.

  • SisterDiane

HAHAHA! If I ever get any good at this video thing, Genevieve, I'll do that course! :-)

  • SisterDiane

It IS fairly quick, isn't it? Surprisingly so – I kept thinking there must be more to do, but there wasn't. Lots to get used to in this medium….

  • SisterDiane

Anytime I can help someone justify another Apple purchase, I am there! :-)

  • SisterDiane

I agree, Linda – I'm fascinated by what's happening over at YouTube right now. There are some channels that offer such articulate and interesting discussion, and are in many ways waaaaaay better than most of what's on network TV right now.

…Although I do worry about what all this means for reading sometimes.

  • SisterDiane

Thank you, arudolph! Once I have a few of these under my belt, and am sure I can keep the project going, I'll set up a iTunes feed and a YouTube channel.

  • SisterDiane

HAHA! Gratuitous Pushkin Footage! …And a new segment for this show is born. :-) (So glad you liked the video! Thanks!)

  • SisterDiane

WOWEE, y'all – all your kind comments have made an awesome start to this day! Thank you so much for all the great feedback on this new project. I'm so excited to make more videos for you in future! XOXOXOX

  • I like what I see so far and can't wait to watch the next one. Have fun!

  • tortagialla

There's also the revolution of reading on the kindle and ipad, etc… but I still like the good 'ole paperback and snuggling up to read…will be interesting to see how this all evolves and rolls out…scary and exciting!

  • pauloverton

Awesometown! The world needs CraftyPod video! Honestly though, I don't know how you juggle it all. I think I'll nickname you “The Machine” or maybe “The Crafty Terminator”. Good luck with the new venture!

  • SisterDiane

Me, too! I think that, over time, all these “new media” channels will sort of shake down into specific kinds of content, delivered for specific kinds of entertainment/use. What a freaking fascinating time to be alive, eh?

  • Sorka

    coool!! Nice to see you!!

  • This is awesome, Diane! *You're* awesome! I'm so excited by what you're doing I was compelled to blog the reasons why – http://www.kimwerker.com/2010/04/26/sister-dian….

    Oh, yes. So excited.

  • I agree, it's a fascinating time to be alive…the reach a single person has with the internet…how easy it is to communicate your ideas…crazy cool!

  • kim

I like this – you're funny and fun to watch! I usually show the things that don't turn out on my blog… my kids had started to think that everything I tried was easy for me and always worked out… I wanted them (and others) know that sometimes you have to try and try and try again. I can't wait to see what you videoblog next!

  • SisterDiane

That's an awesome approach to a video blog, Kim! I'll check yours out!

  • SisterDiane

OOh, wow – holy hell! Thank you indeed! I used to kind of hate video blogs, but have been seeing some really great ones lately, and took all my cues from them. I will now go send you a very long, link-filled email. :-)

  • SisterDiane

HAHAHAHA! I have shared your feelings up until now, Anotheryarn. We'll just see where this thing goes. I like the writing too much to ever give that kind of blogging up.

  • SisterDiane

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! I want to see a Yummygoods video blog! (And also, I already have a #brontealong mention built into the upcoming Episode 2!)

  • SisterDiane

Hee hee… believe me, whenever that cat has an opinion, he makes it known! (Thanks for the kind words – so glad you liked the video!

  • Love this idea! So personal and real….love getting to know who I'm 'listening' and talking to and knowing a 'real' person….

The danger is that someday you will be getting video comments….now do you reallly wan tto see the chaos that is MY life? :-)

  • SisterDiane

    Hee hee… yes, I do!

  • jeaniebabbage

What fun! Like with podcasts, I can still work while watching and go back if I didn't get it! Of course hub might get upset that even less housework is getting done, but hey, I'm learning something. Isn't that more important than having clean dishes?

  • Shanghaicowgirl

Awww yeah. Filling in my CraftyPod withdrawal periods with video too? Awesome.
I'm really looking forward to these videoblogs, and what you said about the perfectionist aspects of craft blogging really resonated with me.
I recently watched an episode of Threadbanger – which is hit and miss for me – sometimes it's awesome, sometimes I think it's not so awesome. I found it curious that Corinne detailed what she did that DIDN'T work and actually showed the unsuccessful attempts as well as providing a tutorial for what did work. Then I saw your mom's post on trying out the coloured podge on jars and then Filth Wizardry post on the trial and error of using plastic bags as iron-on for shirts. I liked that in all of these examples, they just talked about it on par with their successes, instead of the overtly self-depreciating “FAIL” discussion which just hurt my head like a hundred dogs.

Looking forward to seeing the mess and creating some of my own!

  • SisterDiane

I so agree, Shanghaicowgirl – it's great to see more of our collective rough edges coming out. I think there's far more learning potential there than in perfection.

  • gorgeous and hilarious, naturally. (honestly though, i have trouble keeping up with both audio and video media on the internet! another stick in the mud i guess.)

  • Anonymous

How exciting! can’t wait to see more of these!

  • Found your blog today and am very excited to find someone video blogging…great idea, since what is we is sooo visual…will defo check back soon for updates!!!
    Ruth

  • SisterDiane

Not at all! I think different people will resonate with different kinds of media. Thanks for the kind comment!
