Dear Blog, I really miss you.
It’s about all I can do to keep up with deadlines right now, but I did want to pop in and share this awesome piece of self-publishing I treated myself to last week.
Hanna recently started publishing Mettazine, which is about subjects she’s passionate about. This first issue covers art journaling. (The name is based on a word from the yoga tradition that means “loving-kindness.”)
(That’s a wallpaper cover, by the way, with a nameplate sewn on. Swoon.)
Mettazine is totally charming and educational. I’ve watched the whole art-journal thing from afar, but never really understood it until I read Hanna’s zine. She writes from the heart about what she’s gained from her journal process, and how her journals serve as a living document of who she is and how she changes over time.
Bonus Awesome: lots of fun paper bits to use in your own journal-making. I adore zines for this exactly this reason – they can include so many wonderful surprises. (Also, pink and yellow pages!)
Hanna’s also taken the time to hand-color some illustrations, and compiled her recommendations for books, materials, and inspiration prompts. The whole thing is very warm and honest, and it makes me want to chuck everything I’m doing right now and focus on art journaling.
You can get your own copy at her shop when they’re available – but I notice that two printings have already sold out. Maybe leave a comment at her blog and ask about the next run.

I was just listening yesterday to the interview you did with Hanna about her blog book. This zine look wonderful.
I love this zine!!
Thank you Diane, your review just made my day!
…And your zine totally made mine!
You had me at hello. I’m taking Elsie Flannigan and Rachel Denbow’s “Tell Your Story” art journaling class and loving it! It’s also my first e-class. Loving that too! Just bought one in Hanna’s shop – thanks!! :) (This will also be my first zine :)
Wow, super cool! I love zines and paper and art journaling :) I hope Hanna restocks!
I believe she has… she just emailed me and said she'd listed a few more copies. Hurry! :-)
Yaaaaaay! There are so many great zines out there. It's a good addiction to start. :-)
If you know more awesome ones, I'd love more reviews on them. I get sorta lost in the zine category on Etsy…like Hanna I've always wanted to make one because they seem so cool. Figure I should see some awesome ones first in person though. ;)
Those look so awesome! I am still craving to jump on the zine train – I need more time in the day!
Man, me too! I have so many zine projects in my head, and no time to make them…
Just wanted to say I ordered a copy and so anxious for the arrival… all this talk of zines also brews up some old ambitions to make one myself! It's so fun to dig into little zines, makes me feel like a happy kid.
Yaaaaaay! You will love it!
