Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

The First Official Farmer’s Market Visit of 2010!

DSCN3609

All I can say is, Hooraaaaaaaaay!

K. and I made our first official visit to the farmer’s market this morning – finally! Normally we start in May, but thanks (no thanks, really) to cold, grey weather, we waited a while this year.

So this was an odd start to the veggie season. Usually, we go to the May markets and there are those precious few strawberries and some greens that everyone fights over. This time, we had the early-season berries and onions and lettuces sitting next to later-season tomatoes and zucchini and raspberries.

…As if this were anything to complain about! Still, this looks to be an odd sort of growing season.

I scored my annual fava beans, and we’ve already gorged on strawberries. Oddly, there weren’t any peapods yet. So I still need my annual chlorophyll fix.

Ooh – and I got a bunch of these teeny tiny potatoes, which are killer roasted with some thyme and garlic.

…And if you’re just joining us, I’ll mention that every Summer, I make a little project of photographing pretty stuff at the markets. I just fired up this year’s Flickr set – Woo!

We also shot a bit of video today, so perhaps you’ll see that (ahem!) soon, too.

  • I should feel lucky to live in the hot south where we get early warm weather and strawberries, but sometimes when it’s over 90 degrees it’s a little difficult!

I’m also lucky to live close to the State Farmer’s Market.

  • Ooooh, strawberries! Nothing compares to the first fresh beriries in early summer!

I love your photography and I agree, it really makes me hungry too… :)

What a wonderful bounty of earthy goodness. I will be making some trips to the farmers market this season.

  • thanks for taking us with you at the market and sharing these yummy pictures! Aaah, the strawberries! They're 3 weeks in advance this year in Quebec, thanks to warmer than usual Spring.

I have to drive a bit to the closest farmers' market near me. Your pictures are so colourful and makes me want to eat!! Nice to know that we all support our local farmers :)

Wow, our Spring must have migrated to your side of the continent! We started warm very early, with the trees blooming in February, but then descended into a long period of cold and gloom.

…Although, early strawberries are never a calamity, right? :-)

  • SisterDiane

Boy, absolutely, Megs! We love supporting local farmers, and the produce is so much better than the stuff that's traveled thousands of miles to get here.

Oh I LOVE these pictures! Looks delightful! I just got a bounty similar to this from my sister’s garden! Love it.

Those strawberries look great! There’s something much nicer about eating food from markets, rather than massive chain stores!

  • those strawberries look great :D not sure when the next market here is, usually once a month but the weather has been really wet on the weekends here so probably rained out :/

  • SisterDiane

Ah, that's the way to do it – have a sister with a nice garden! :-)

  • SisterDiane

Ooh, I'll bet that's an amazing market! And I agree with you – I'll take our cool-and-rainy in exchange for a long-hot summer anytime. :-)

  • Ooh, is that yellow rhubarb – what is that stuff?? Those red onions look amazing – the way they catch the light, they’re practically glowing!

  • oooooooooh boy does this make me long for Portland (even more than usual!)

  • SisterDiane

The yellow stuff is chard – though I don't know the variety. There's an awesome mix called “rainbow chard,” where they mix seeds from all the red, yellow, orange, and pink varieties. So beautiful!

  • These photos are gorgeous! They make me want to get out and go to ours regardless of the heat. I love that you have a flickr set for your market outings. I look forward to seeing it progress.

  • SisterDiane

Thank you! It's always a fun little project. Here's last year's set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21113527@N00/sets/…

  • I'm SO glad to know I'm not the only nerdo who photographs their farmer's market finds!! Hahaha. I just can't resist- everything looks so lovely and fresh!! These are beautiful photos! I skipped my local market this weekend (it was gloomy and cold here in Los Angeles this weekend) so I will live vicariously through yours ;)

  • SisterDiane

Hee hee – it is kinda nerdy, but I never get tired of photographing heaped-up produce. :-) Hope the weather improves in LA this week so you can get out to your market this weekend!
