This video is the first in a little series I’m cooking up. Google Analytics is a great tool for tracking your blog’s stats, but it also has some nifty not-so-obvious features you can use to really learn more about who’s reading what on your blog.
In this first installment, we’ll analyze a big traffic spike. Where did it come from, and what post caused it?
If you like this video, here’s the rest of the series.

Thanks for the tips. I've never really played around with the date function that much.
Very nifty! Thank you, I didn't realize you could just focus in on one day.
Fantastic! Thanks so much for this!
Thanks for doing this! I use Google Analytics, but don't really know enough about its features to make it work for me. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of your series!
I've been meaning to set up Google analytics for ages, but haven't come around to it yet… I will follow your new series with great interest and be sure to do something about my analytics situation now! :-)
NIce. Very nice. Some crafty person should stitch or stencil their best spike or favorite bloggy date line. :)
HAHAHA! Oh, I could not love that idea more… I can see a whole set of studio pillows, embroidered with stat graphs. :-)
Great info! I can't wait to see the other videos. :)
There is another way to know what content your stumble upon visitors are clicking through to. You can set up a filter to use as a “user defined value” (choose that instead of “referral path” from the drop down) and then Google shows you the referral url, which includes the query string. For stumble upon, you get to see the urls like:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/refer.php?url=http%3…
Yep, most of my stumble upon traffic still comes from my post about your book! :) If you're interested in the details, let me know. :)
Super helpful video. Thanks so much.
Thank you Diane! And thank you in advance for the series!
“Playing with Dates” is going to be a very helpful tool. As is always the case – you rock!
Very useful! Just picking one day is a priceless tip. Thank you so much Diane!
thank you for sharing! I'll never have numbers as big as yours, but it's interesting to see where the traffic comes from!
It just takes time, Cate – I've been blogging for about four years now. And it took a full year to begin finding my audience. Just keep at it!
Thanks for the intro to Google Analytics. Web analytics was a big part of my last job, but there I had some high-powered corporate tools at my disposal. It's great to know that I can have access to this kind of data for my own sites.
Thanks for this post. I'd never used Google analytics before – but now I think I might be addicted! :)
Just starting to use Google Analytics and this was so helpful, thanks Diane! Now I'm off to watch the one you posted today!
I appreciate your helpful tips on using Google Analytics, thanks Diane!
Thank you so much for pointing this great resource out! I just installed it yesterday and am already amazed by all of the data is it collecting on my blog.
I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of your series on all of Analytics' features.
Awesome, Karen! I'm so glad you found if helpful! More to come!
Thank you so much for your analytics videos, there really easy to understand, as there not full of tech language there to confuse me! You are an inspiration!
Brilliant, so helpful, I’ve been looking at my google analytics for weeks not knowing what to do with it! thank you.
So glad it was helpful – thanks, Jessica!
