This episode is related to this post. One of the biggest advantages of being self-employed is getting paid partially in time. And this day was a perfect example of that.
Sadly, the heat wave here in the NW has played havoc with my lighting scheme and pretty much bedraggled me. So this is kind of a rough-looking video. Sorry. Please blame the weather.

Haha – the little bits about the heat and “dramatization” were great. :) And the pushkin bits crack me up, too. I’ll have to pass that site onto my geneologically inclined family members….
So true about. Maybe trickier to work out with kids, I think, but still doable. I don’t think I spend much, but will rethink tonight at while working at (and trying -not- to spend) at the fabric store tonight. :)
Cool! Despite the weather. If time is money, having control over it is better than a Wall Street bonus. And don’t worry about health care—most health problems are fallout from having a job one hates (where your time and many other things are not self-determined)!
What a very cool thing to do, you guys! With people like John Steinbeck buried here, I bet we'd get some pretty interesting requests and discover a lot of history of the area along the way.
Time, you're right, can be more precious than gold. (And I enjoyed my time watching your video, great job, so nice to “meet” the family!)
Aw, thank you, Dot! Definitely, I'll bet you'd get all kinds of interesting opportunities to explore gravesites in Steinbeck country…
I used a volunteer at findagrave to get a pic of my Grandpa's headstone many years ago. I found it so incredibly touching that somebody in Denver would take time to snap a pic for me and post it. It's a good thing. Oops! Wrong crafter! :)
Ha! Right you are, Teresa. I do get sick less often now – or, if I do, I can actually rest and get over it quickly, as opposed to the multi-week dragging and hacking I used to have to do in my old jobs.
You're absolutely right, Elizabeth. One of the reasons we can live the way we do is we don't have kids, and we've chosen not to own a home. But I do know a couple self-employed people here in PDX who have children. What's really cool is, they involve the kids in the work. I love the idea of giving kids exposure to self-employment early on. Counteracts that indoctrination we were discussing earlier in these comments.
I just wrote an article in my newsletter this month about the same topic! http://katydiddys.blogspot.com/2010/07/monthly-…
Great minds think alike.
I love your videos! You're a fun lady! And your cat is so cute! How hot is out there in Portland? Here in southern Portugal is now 31ºC (88ºF) and it's 10 PM…
Diane,
I am SO glad you started doing videos, I am thoroughly enjoying every one!
So glad to see Katin too, and of course Pushkin – I love that kitty of yours!
Now, you have inspired me again, and I've got work to do!
Thank, Beth! I'm loving your videos, too. Let's BOTH get to work. It's a really fun medium, isn't it?
OUCH. Okay, 88 F at 10pm would be very hard. We had a week of mid-90's here in Portland, though luckily the heat does break here at night. However, since it rarely gets this hot here, very few homes have air conditioning.
Anyway. Obrigado! So glad you liked the video!
Great blog. I was self employed (now retired) for many years and loved having the time to get out and go for a walk, or check out a new area or just do the wash. Just like you, there were days that I was in meetings or working at my computer all day (and into the night), but there also was that freedom. Loved it!
Very cool perspective. I agree that there are tradeoffs whatever decisions we make and we just have to decide what is good for ourselves. What is worth it and what is success? It's a personal choice dependent on our priorities and aspirations in life… Certainly not everyone agrees…
Very true, Linda – I've had some emails that support the more corporate point of view. To each their own, definitely.
Yes! It's amazing how much easier it is to get all those household chores done when you can take care of them at odd times during the day instead of nights and weekends.
The important thing is to respect people's decisions and choices…I don't like the haters!
great point made, my husband works full time and i design / make jewelry full time for the past 13 years form home, and he gets a little jealous about my passion for it, but he doesn't seem to mind when i can stop what i am doing and go on a lunch date with him cuz he all of a sudden has a free hour, or anything else that wouldn't bee so easy if i had a 9-5 and was chained to a desk. i am going to have him watch this, so he can appreciate the little perks that come with me working from home that i think he has forgotten. thanks!
Great post. I was a teacher and although I had a good salary I had no time for anything and wasn't realy living life. Friends and family kept telling me that I had to factor in payment in time and in the end I did and I decided to take a year out. I am having a great time crafting, cooking and catching up with your podcasts and video blogs. Thanks you have just confirmed what I was already feeling about payment in time.
Love this and your podcast! You're very good at this! Always informative and well put together. And, fun! Thanks for your gift to us.
Definitely, that flexibility is so nice to have. When my partner and I both had full-time jobs, we rarely saw each other. Now, we have lots more quality-time.
Good for you, Melanie! A sabbatical does wonders.
There's a great book called You Money or Your Life, by Joe Dominguez. He had you factor in every single hour you spend that's job-related: commuting time, getting-dressed time, decompressing time. And then he had you factor in every single job-related cost: transportation, clothing, lunches. All these numbers factored into what he called your “real wage.” When I had a corporate job and did this math, it was shocking how low my “decent salary” was after all.
Thank you so much, Jennifer! I adore doing it. So glad you're enjoying!
OMG – this is the first one of your videos I've watched – damn, you are Kaitin are so freakin' cute!! Miss you . . .
I love this concept and although I have been self-employed for over a year now, I have never thought of things is this way. It is SO true. Being self-employed has it downsides, just like everything else, but one of the MAJOR ups is setting your own schedule. And as you said it, getting paid in time. Great video!
Thank you, Brittni! Definitely, in the grand scheme of pros and cons, time always wins for me. :-)
This video is so funny, Diane! ^-^ I laughed so much in front of my computer. Gotta love being a geek!
I'm catching up on my blog readings since I'm back from vacations. So here I am, catching up on your blog. I see I have lots of good reading ahead. Woot! :-)
