In this video blog, I take a deep breath and ask you for some help to keep my email more manageable.
I hope you won’t be offended. This is a matter of hours and capacity – nothing personal.
…And by all means, if you do Google your question as I suggest here, and you can’t find a good answer, you’re welcome to email me and I’ll try to help. (But, save me some time by telling me what research you’ve already done, okay?)
I’m sorry to have to ask. I explain more in the video.
UPDATE: Check out this awesome Google cheatsheet that Christina sent me. Super useful for Googling!

Seriously? People ask you questions they could google? I am amazed that you answer them at all! You are extraordinarily generous creating your blog, tutorials and podcast. You never fail to come across as someone I feel I would love to have as a friend. But in spite of my distant affection for you, you are *not* my friend, let alone my unpaid servant. All you've ever had from me is a donation! If people want your blood as well as all that you offer them already… a polite, beautifully crafted video with a side serve of cat commentary is much more than I would feel capable of in your position. It's a shame you have to respond to unreasonable/thoughtless expectations. Because that is what they are. Your time and attention are as valuable as anyone else's. In fact, arguably more important. Especially to you, I hope.
The knowledge you share with us all is so very valuable and appreciated! Please don't feel guilty. There are only so many hours in a day and we all get the same amount.
Thank you for all you do!
OK. So I've done the same thing that you've done, google stuff and then send the links to people. Then I started saying, “I found this stuff on google … ” and sending the list of links. Now I just say, “Beats me. Try googling it.” Or, if the question is RIDICULOUS (something that no reasonable reader of my blog would think I know) I just ignore it … like the girl that sent me photos of a Lady Gaga outfit and asked me how she should make a sewing pattern for it. Really?!
You know what I wish we could do … and this might seem awful … I wish we could send a “fill in the blank” email like the response the author Robert Heinlein used to send: http://kk.org/ct2/2008/09/heinleins-fan-mail-so…
Isn't that last once just precious!?
And, while I was trying to re-find that, I stumbled across this hilarious one from Steve Martin: http://www.lettersofnote.com/2010/06/personal-l…
I wish I wrote a humor blog, because I'd love to send one like this! :)
Dot! That's so awesome! I had no idea you could do that thing you did with the first link. I totally laughed!
I'm a long time lurker on your blog, I've been working my way through your podcast archives, just loving your work. I must admit though, I usually have fingers covered in glue so am terrible about getting on to comment and tell you how awesome I think your work is. This post however made me get up, wash my gluey fingers and sit down to type.
This is a perfectly reasonable request to make, but I think it's awful that you've had to make it in the first place. I can't believe that people would email you with random questions that they could easily google. You are such a generous spirit to not only put all the fabulous content on this blog that you do – but to then answer all your emails – I have no idea how you have done it up to this point!
I happened to find your blog and it’s unbelievable people don’t know how to do basic researching. I do it so much that I have 100′s of bookmarks. So it is a quite reasonable request you are making.
BTW, have you lived in Northern AZ at one time? You have a twin there with the same looks and name! :-)
HAHAH! That’s odd – I went to college there. But I’m pretty sure I graduated. :-)
You’re so darn sweet! Off to google!! ; )
Please, I have got a question about your book “Kanzashi in bloom”. I would like to know how to made the lotus flower pin on 13th page. What type of petal is used and the instructions to join them.
Thank you very much.
Yours sincerely,
Pilar Ruiz
Hi, Pilar – actually, that flower was made by a traditional Kanzashi artist, Kaneko Kanawa. It’s shown in the book as an example of the craft as it’s done in Japan. My book, since it covers a more simplified form of Kanzashi-making, doesn’t include any instructions for that flower.
You might try exploring the links I’ve shared on the book’s website, http://www.kanzashi-in-bloom.com. Those links will take you to a lot of websites where the more traditional form of the craft is being shared.
I had to laugh as I watched this video – I wish I could duplicate it for my day job. You have no idea how many PhD level students ask me how to use a tab in Word (or some other mundane word processing skill). I try to get them to google, but so far, not much luck. Hope your request (reasonable & sane!) yielded some good results.
Heh! It’s too bad, how few people realize the truly amazing power they have right at their fingertips every day!
