Dawn Devries Sokol sent me a review copy of Doodle Diary: Art Journaling for Girls, her new book aimed at girls aged 8 and up. It’s really fun and cute!
It’s all hand-lettered and drawn by Dawn. And there is some basic art-journaling information in the front, but most of the book is dedicated to creative prompts that will get girls actually making art in the book.
Each two-page spread is another colorful, enticing idea. Honestly, if you were interested in breaking into art journaling but felt intimidated by the adult books, I think this would be a fantastic entry point into the craft.
If I had a niece, she’d be getting this book as a back-to-school present. But since I’m more of a nephew-girl, let’s have a giveaway!
To enter, post a comment below and tell me about the girl you’ll give this to if you win. (If that girl happens to be you, that’s totally okay.) Bonus points if, in your entry, you can explain to me just how the heck it’s already September.
I’ll take entries through Sunday, September 6th. International readers, you’re most welcome to enter.
Good Luck! (Oh – and that link up there is an affiliate link.)
UPDATE: Congratulations to Tsoniki, our winner!

I will hang onto it for just a tiny bit for some inspiration & pass it on to my youngest daughter who would absolutely love it!
It's already September cuz it needs to hurry up & be November so I can have my new little baby girl :]
It would be going to my daughter! She is such a little artist! In my world it's already September because we filled up our summer with way too much fun stuff!

I would give it to my sister. She begins the university this year and It'd be a good present!
I like this idea of doodle today and the rest of the year!!So I would probably give it to me! Now about September, well, 62 years ago my mom went to the hospital on August 31. Since I now semi qualify for more senior stuff, it must be September! Hope that clears that up for you!
I would give it to my niece as she loves to journal and do artsy stuff!!
I would give this to my wonderful little niece. She's only 7, but she's been a little lady since she was about a year and a half. Now that she's getting a little older, I'm feeling a bit like I'm turning into her boring old aunt – even though I'm only 22! Sometimes I think she might prefer to get a 50euro game rather than a handmade gift, but that's just the way I roll, and when she's older, hopefully she'll appreciate it. Maybe this would get her into crafting and we'd have something to bond over as she gets a bit older?
I have NO freaking idea how it came to be September. It was May only a moment ago!
Have a great weekend.
I would give this to my very artistic, very talented 7 yr old niece. Pixies( those impish fairies) heat drugged us & 'done stolt' the summer, that's how it is September!
I would give this to my lovely daughter Pearl who is starting at university to study marine biology in a few weeks. She has always made books and journals like this from when she was a little girl, and it would be a lovely reminder to keep up her creativity and sense of fun even when the studying gets tough :)
I would give this to a lovely girl for whom I used to babysit. They are getting so old now!!!
I would give this to one of my clients (I'm a family therapist) who just started middle school and REALLY REALLY needs to be able to vent and express herself!
this is so cool! My kids would love this
I would give this to my beautiful daughter who loves nothing more than doodling, usually all over my important papers! She thinks it will make people happy to see a bit of art when i'm paying my bills at the bank!
this would be a GREAT way to capture that fleeting time before the end of summer and school…also it would make a good boredom buster during school, haha :)
thank you for this giveawaY!
here is my email just in case:
sumshi.is.yummyATgmailDOTcom
My daughter would love this. She is always drawing on things.
I would give it to the neighbor girl around the corner. She is such a fabulous mix of girlish and Tom tomboy and oh-so-crafty! I feel ya on the September thing.
I'd give this to my 12 year old daughter as it looks like one of her school books after she's had it for an hour! So she wouldn't have to doodle to personalise it and might just get round to actually doing some homework!
I'd give this to my 12 year old daughter as it looks like one of her school books after she's had it for an hour. Maybe to time saved not having to personalise it with doodles could be spent doing some actual homework! Fat chance :)
I would give it as a present to myself. As September arrives and the new term starts it is all too easy to forget about feeding my own creativity. All my time and energy goes into encouraging students' creative acts. So this would be a great reminder to take some creative time for myself.
I would gift this book to myself. As September arrives so does the new academic year. My own creativity is abandoned, all energy is focussed on encouraging the creative activities of my students. This book would encourage me to take time for myself and nurture my own creative practices.
If I won this Doodle book I think I would give it to myself. The reason I would give it to myself is that I have been wanting to start my own art journal. You stated above that this would be a good resource to start out an art journal if it was your first try at an art journal. This is the second place I have seen this book reviewed this week. I read a review of this book in a magazine this past week too and it got a great review as well.

This is really cool! I'd give this to my neice!
I would give the book to Jenik, the 9 year old girl I tutor through a volunteer program. I started tutoring Jenik about a month ago, and, since then, she's become very interested in my art. I often will show her some of my work as a “treat” after our tutoring sessions. She loves to make her own art, too, and will often beg me to have “doodle session” with her. I know that she would just adore having her very own art journaling book, since, for now, I have just been giving her some articles I have printed out from online. This book would be such a delight for Jenik. And, hey, I may learn a thing or two!
What a neat idea for a journal! I'd work on it together with my daughter who's just learning to read but loves to draw and write along with me.
Ooh- I have an almost 8 year old that would just love that book. She loves to draw and doodle and is a wonderful artist.
I'd probably be the girl that I'd give this to. What a fun idea! omydarlingblog(at)gmail(dot)com
I'd give it to someone about my age with brown hair and blue eyes, who owns tons of pens and markers and paint
This is fantastic! Both my girls would love it – have been encouraging them to keep a wriiten journal, but this is more fun! Beth

I know a 10 year old who would adore this…. she would be really into journalling if given prompts like this- it looks like a great introduction
Not a clue how the heck it's September already… it seems to have come by sooo fast….

I would give this to my daughter as she loves anything like this and writes a lot of poetry
I would give this to my (nearly) 10 yr old daughter. She's just started taking an interest in my journal so this would be a perfect introduction for her. What can I tell you about her? Hmm – She's a tomboy grungey princess with a love for all things crafty *g*
And it's September already because the more I panic that I've made nothing for Christmas – the faster it approaches!
I would give this to my teenage sister. Who's an awesome artist and has a flair for English. Im sure she get alot of use out of it
I would give this to my 12 year old daughter. She is an aspiring artist and doodler. As for September, it has a way of always popping in after August and frankly after the suffocating summer we had, I am so happy to breathe again.
I dont know who I would give this too, I would probs keep it because I am a teenager and whenever I feel like writing a diary/Journal I do one page and then just forget about it but this is amazing and really cool and I reckon if I had this I would do it everyday. I am a girly girl who loves to draw and craft :)
I would definately give this to my Neice, she has just started at secondary school and I think this would be great to save all her memories with her new friends. I am really into arts and crafts and shes always asking me to teach her so I know she would adore this.
I'd give it to my Daughter who loves writing stories and poems.
My 14 year old daughter has been my sunshine through a terrible violent marriage and then the loss of her little sister. She uses art as her safe place to let out all her emotions, and has been recognised by her school and The Helen Foundation for art as the best in her year. We just took a trip to see all the galleries in London and she is so inspired right now this would be a wonderful gift for her and let her know how special she is.
I would give this book to my niece Georgia for her ninth birthday that's coming up. She's an incredibly creative little girl. She loves to scrapbook and make cards. She even made all the invitations to her birthday party by herself.
I give this to my granddaughter who would love it, she is a beautiful artistic little girl who would be a deserving recipient. She loves to draw and is very creative.
I've got a scrapbooker's book on doodling that this would totally match with. I can totally see this jump-starting ideas because many pages of notes for any subject feature flowers and hearts and swirls in the margins! So yeah, I'd probably keep this for myself, being totally honest :D
Oh this is great! I'd either keep it for myself…it looks adorable…and share it with one of the many tween/teen girls in my life that might be interested.
And it's september already because fall is the best time of the year. not too hot, not too cold. :)

This is so amazingly cool! If I won I'd be keeping this journal to inspire my own creativity. Anyways, I'm still such a young girl at heart (and I only just turned twenty-two this August).
Oh, and it's September already because the seasons are constantly changing as our beautiful planet Gaia dances slowly around her partner the Sun. :)
as soon as i read “Honestly, if you were interested in breaking into art journaling but felt intimidated by the adult books, I think this would be a fantastic entry point into the craft.” i knew that should go to my mom. she loves all things crafty and creative, but she also gets intimidated by the idea of venturing into “art” which is silly since she has impeccable craftsmanship and a good imagination. her friend jan (who can do just about any kind of art she tries) art journals so now mom talks about wanting to learn how to art journal. (didn't you have a posting about an art journaling zine a while ago? i totally sent that link to my mom.) so if this book really is a good starting point for adults too, then i think it would totally be up my mom's alley.
My own little lady is still a little young for this, but I’d give this a read for myself and then save it for her :)
me, because i think this would totally help me unleash my creativity, sometimes it's just a hard thing to do. thanks for the giveaway! :)

I missed the giveaway I guess – love this book so much though I might just have to buy it myself :-p
Well honestly, I’m obsessed with journaling, and I am really sad that the give-away is over. You should do another one. I’m 16 (almost) and I really need a way that’s cute and creative to channel my thoughts…((:
