Hello there! I'm Sister Diane and I have two grand passions: making crafts and making media. That's what I write about here, and sometimes, I get all thoughtful about internet culture and creative small businesses. Thanks for stopping by! Would you like some tea?

Review (and Giveaway!) Doodle Diary

doodle_diary1

Dawn Devries Sokol sent me a review copy of Doodle Diary: Art Journaling for Girls, her new book aimed at girls aged 8 and up. It’s really fun and cute!

doodle_diary2

It’s all hand-lettered and drawn by Dawn. And there is some basic art-journaling information in the front, but most of the book is dedicated to creative prompts that will get girls actually making art in the book.

doodle_diary5

Each two-page spread is another colorful, enticing idea. Honestly, if you were interested in breaking into art journaling but felt intimidated by the adult books, I think this would be a fantastic entry point into the craft.

doodle_diary4

If I had a niece, she’d be getting this book as a back-to-school present. But since I’m more of a nephew-girl, let’s have a giveaway!

To enter, post a comment below and tell me about the girl you’ll give this to if you win. (If that girl happens to be you, that’s totally okay.) Bonus points if, in your entry, you can explain to me just how the heck it’s already September.

doodle_diary3

I’ll take entries through Sunday, September 6th. International readers, you’re most welcome to enter.

Good Luck! (Oh – and that link up there is an affiliate link.)

UPDATE: Congratulations to Tsoniki, our winner!

  • I would put this in my prize box in my third grade classroom. I have several girls in my room who I know would LOVE this! They doodle all over the place on their papers, so it'd be nice to give them something made specifically for that!

  • Heidi

I would like to use this myself. It's so neat!

This is meant for my little sister. Who is mad at me, so I need to give her a gift where she can draw angry doodles of me to make herself feel better

  • Oh, how cute! If I win this it will go straight to my 10-year-old step-grand daughter. My daughter and son-in-law have taken full custody of her and she is now excelling in school, sports and life! I’m so proud of them all! This Art Journal would be a great outlet for her creative side. (And, sorry, I’m just as clueless as to where August disappeared to!)

  • Kirstie

My 8 year old daughter is obsessed with writing at the moment – be it about school, herself or me! She would love something like this to keep all those important notes

YES, I have a niece who is a very artistically expressive and she would LOVE to have this book! I also LOVE to doodle when I am journaling … it gives additional expression to the words on the page.

PS … You blinked in February and it became September :-)

  • Doris

I have a niece who is 13 and just started Junior High last week…this would be right up her alley!

  • Yvonne G

YES! I have a niece who is very artistically expressive and she would LOVE this book. I also LOVE to doodle when I am journaling … it just gives more expression to the words on the page. :-)

OMG This is awesome! I would love to win for my daughter! She just turned 9 and absolutely loves paper, pens, pencils, colored pencils, journals, diaries, etc. She has a stash of her own office supplies (when organizing for school I found five stuffed full pencil boxes) and paper – journals, notebooks, paper pads, etc. She is constantly writing, drawing, making lists, coloring, making up stories, etc. Last weekend she and her girlfriends (and a couple of boys, her brother included) started writing a play. They had a few auditions and picked where they want to do it. She talked about making it into a movie. She's just a huge paper producer. She would love this.

  • Crystalizeddestruction

I have a niece that it would be perfect for! It would be a great journal especially now that she's in middle school and a great from of artistic expression since she loves to draw and color. She would love to have that and to express herself more with that!

The reason I think its already September is already here is that it wants to take summer break away from us XD Lol. It always goes by fast when you start growing up and watching others grow up from being so young :D I love all my nieces and my godchildren!

  • tinycandi

My daughter would love this! She's 8 years old and she's a very sensitive girl who loves to write about her feelings. Being able to do it all in an artsy way…she would love it!!

  • Suesue

I would totally give this to my redheaded niece who is 9! She would love it!! Thanks so much for the chance to spread creativity throughout the world!

  • Rachel M

I would give this book to my boyfriends niece, Lulu, who lives in Qatar (in the Middle East). She is 9 and is very creative. This book would not only help her with her artsy side but it would help her learn english too :)! I have made her stuffed toys in the past and she always says she would love to be able to do that one day back! Maybe she can design them in the doodle book :)!

  • Wodge81

I would love to give this book to my cousin. She's 13 and would absolutely love it!!

  • Linda

I would love to give this to my best friend. She's an adult but she suffers from depression and she needs to journal and she needs some fun. This combines the best of both. :) As for September…well, it's a sneaky month and while we were all out having a picnic and enjoying the beach it snuck up on us…and BAM! We got a knock-out back to school, think about Autumn punch!

  • The girl to get this book would be me ;-) At 64, I've just discovered doodling and I'm having a ball.

It's September already because time flies when you're having fun!

  • Christine

I would give this book to my daughter Nattie who just turned nine this summer and starts fourth grade next week. She loves science, ancient Egypt, reading, sewing little things out of felt, writing stories, and drawing silly comics.

  • Dee

Give it to my daughter and it might encourage her to keep her doodles in one place and not all over her floor, her bed, etc..

  • what a colourful looking book! :D looks like so much fun. I don't know girls that are 8 so would either use it myself or save it until my niece is old enough to use it :) I wish I knew how its september already! this year has gone so fast, its not funny

  • Chris

I will give this to my good friend Kerry, who is secretly artistic but feels silly about doing arty things. I will show her that doodling is FUN and isn't SERIOUS but is REAL and RULES!!

  • N2chux

I am really torn…if I won this, it would either go to my sister or my cousin….both would really really like it, I think! I think its cool, myself!!!

    n2chux@hotmail.com

  • Mallory1031

I think my younger sister in law Ellie would love this!!! She loves fun creative things like this!!!

  • Katie

I would give it to my daughter who is about to turn 12…think she'd be into it!

  • Angelee

I would like this book for myself but I would also like to give it to my best friend. She would love it too.

  • Karina_baker

oh i love this book! my daughter would absolutely adore something like this… she often cant get the words out to express the amount of stuff thats in her head so this would be perfect :)

  • Uaclady

This book is perfect for my step daughter! Thanks so much for sharing.

  • Leah

Looks like so much fun! I have a soon to be 10 year old and I think she would go nuts over it. Plus I can learn from it too…

  • Dee

I think my niece would absolutely ADORE this book. She is not only my niece but my goddaughter and so I think she has a lot of my crafty-ness and creativity times 2! She is the sweetest girl and the bestest biggest cousin. She sits and plays with my girls for hours and takes care of them every time I need an extra hand when we're on family vacations, without even being asked. She helps out everywhere she is… school, church, home. She is very special and dear to my heart and makes such a wonderful impression everywhere she goes. Oh, and she is doodler – which is the utmost reason I think this book is for her. As for why it is September already — hmmm, maybe my niece can come up with a creative response… Ha. Like September comes after August!

  • Reena

I would give this to a friend's daughter. She is turning 12 and very introverted. I think this would be a great present for her :)

    reenas85(at)hotmail(dot)com

I would like this book for myself because I love doodling and I've always wanted to have a new notebook where I can draw to express what I feel

  • Amanda H

I would love to win this for my sister, she is 14 and has been through alot recently, our arents have split up which has hit her really hard and she is being bullied at school. I would love to win this for her so she can have somewhere to write down her thoughts and feelings as she finds it really difficult to speak to us about it.

  • Anne T

Katie (niece, aged 8) would love this – she is always drawing, writing, cutting, sticking, colouring so this would be perfect for her.

How is it September already? It's because you've had such a great and busy year – time flies when you're having fun!

  • I would love this for my sister. she loves art and it would be nice if she could have a book where she could do 'fun' art rather than serious drawings

    todas50 (at) hotmail (dot) com

  • tiff

i would also like this book for myself! doodling is my thing…it's how i relax! i wish i could tell you how it's september already but i'm utterly confused myself! :D

I would give it to my cousin who has just turned 8 as she love drawing and organising! Oh and it is September already because everyone doesn't want it to be!!! Law of sod!

  • Margret Maria Leifsdottir

    Wow, this looks amazing!

My stepdaughter would surely love this. She is just turning 13 and has just started middle school.

She is forever drawing and writing and this journal would be just perfect for her. A couple of years ago she taught herself english to be able to read comic books written in english (we are Icelandic and live in Iceland but I hope that we are still eligible for this giveaway because this is just amazing).

About september…. I love it! I usually find August slightly sad since summer is coming to an end but come september the leaves are starting to turn, the air feels crisp and you get to put on your favorite sweater again.

Thank you for your great and inspiring blog, and I especially love your podcasts. Each one of them is more inspiring than the last.

    margretmaria@gmail.com

  • What an empowering and fun book!

I have nephews too – one is related and the other is my best friend's little boy. That being said, I would totally love and use this book! I've actually been spending some time thinking back on when I was a child – and how I made art almost constantly. I don't know if the memories are spurring my creativity or the reverse, but I've been working on my art a lot lately.

The summer flew by didn't it? Wait – did we even get a summer here in PDX?

Thanks for the giveaway – fun!

  • Tracy Beaudoin

Hello, I found you through Dawn. She gave the Art Journaling Ning group this URL. I have been wandering around and loving your site. Definitely added to my faves and my blog feed reads.

If I won this book, I would give it to myself as I am still a young girl at heart (lol), but I would share it with my wonderful Mom with whom I share my art journaling with! It would be an inspiration to two young gals who play with paper, paints, and all kinds of found junk! lol
