Halloween approaches – really, really fast! And I had an absolute ball making this tutorial for carving Turnip-O-Lanterns over at CRAFT.
Turnips, as it turns out, are a bit more historically correct as jack-o-lanterns than pumpkins. And also, they just have this endearingly warty, hairy, scarred, and monstrous look about them.
Click over to the how-to and see how I made them!

I just cooked turnips for dinner and the ones we got were really bitter. I’ve always wanted to try carving them but never have. Seems like a good use for the rest of our bitter turnips- so maybe this is the year!
Ooh, definitely – and, blech. Nothing like a bitter turnip. :-/
Wow, are we reading the same book? I just read that bit of trivia the other night in one of the crafty Halloween books I took out of the library! Love the faces on these two!
Cheers,
Leigh-Anne
Thanks, Leigh-Anne! I love that old legend…
I totally love these, Diane. I have the image you sent me on my desktop for the rest of the month!

the FIL told me he use to carve out the insides for hubby and his brothers when they were younger, seems like a lot of work lol (many colourful words were said :p) turnips here are often bigger then the pumpkins tho lol
Oooooo, I’d like to get my hands on one of THOSE turnips! (Sounds like a great forearm workout, though!) :-)
That came out so awesome! I love the ghostly shape!
