Giveaway (& Free PDF): Craft Hope

Craft Hope cover

I’m in a frenzy of tutorial-making, preparing for something BIG here next week. So, to take us into our weekend, we have a lovely giveaway, courtesy of Lark Crafts.

They’re donating one copy of Craft Hope: Handmade Crafts for a Cause, which comes from the blog of the same name. In this book, Jade Sims has collected a group of craft projects and matched them to a group of crafty charities. She tells you about the charities, gives you alternatives for doing similar crafty giving in your local community, and gives you step-by-step instructions for each project. Pretty cool, eh?

Lark also donated a nice PDF project from the book for you to download! These fingerless gloves are designed by Betsy Greer. Click here to get your copy.

(And incidentally, you can read an interview with Jade about the Craft Hope project here.

To enter to win a copy of the book, leave me a comment below and tell me: a) which crafty charity is your favorite and why, OR: b) tell me about some crafting you’ve done for charity. We’ll choose a winner at noon PST on Monday, December 13th..

International readers, please enter away. Good Luck, everyone – and Happy Weekend!

When hurricane Katrina came along I started a project called Purls Of Hope for Pearlington MS. We were able to send quite a few boxes, including knitted draft catchers for FEMA trailers and other needed items!

  • It seems most of the crafting I do is for charity. Usually I donate crocheted and knitted blankets to Project Linus, but I also have made them for Afghans for Afghans and our local childrens hospital. I love seeing books that encourage people to donate their talents to those who are in need. It reminds me that there really are still some wonderful people in the world.

I love what Craft Hope does, I think they are amazing. I took part in their auction for Haiti, it was incredible how quickly people responded to the call to craft. There are so many example of generous crafters out there.
My children go to a school that run a Christmas fair entirely for charity. They research charities then choose a few to donate to, it’s a wonderful way to get into the spirit of the season and the children learn so much. My little Gracie made wool loom flowers this year and made about £50 for her chosen charity, it was a lot of work but fun too. And guess who offered to help make them next year? I’ll give you a hint, she’s related to you ;)

  • My most recent craft-for-charity sort of deal was a pair of helmetwarmers which I knit and sent off to Afghanistan. It wasn’t through an actual charity -there was a lady on Ravelry who had made one for her husband before he deployed, and suddenly his whole squadron wanted ‘em- but it was for a good cause, I think. It gets cold in those mountains.

ConKerr Cancer is my favorite charity because of all the beautiful pillowcases that are made & collected for sick children. I can only imagine the joy a child feels to lay their heads down on a colorful pillowcase made with love for the.

  • Recently Indonesia had been through triple natural disasters in 3 different provinces; flood, tsunami and volcano eruption. To participate in helping the survivors, I held a charity auction of my handmade bags online, which posted in http://ibukiki.multiply.com/photos/album/98/Auction_for_Craft_For_Humanity_ .

What a wonderful giveaway – that keeps on giving! When we lived Stateside, I made almost 100 of the fleece tie blankets and donated them to our local foster-care program. I loved being able to positively impact the lives of young people in our community and it was a great stress-outlet for me. I look forward to doing this again in a few years. Til then, I’m on the hunt for other crafty projects I can donate to help others in need. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  • How exciting! I don’t have this book yet! My favorite crafting for others was when I went once a month to a kids club in a disadvantaged neighborhood and led the craft time. It was a fun challenge to think of things that kids 4-12 could do, esp. when I never knew if there would be 25 or 60! Best day of the year was always tie-dye day – they were to proud of their shirts and it was such a fun circus. :)

Writing this out reminds me of the fun and makes me hope my schedule will change again someday so that I can do it again.

I have been knitting and crocheting special washcloths and beading bracelets for breast cancer patients. I hand them out at each of my treatments. It’s amazing how such a small act of kindness can bring such a big smile to someone’s face.

Looks like a book full of beautiful projects. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Tabitha

I’ve been knitting helmet liners and fingerless mitts for a local troop deployed in Afghanistan.

we dont have the book yet either but we are making cloth bags for the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry!
They have loved the first batch and hope to deliver a bunch more before Christmas!

My favorite? The Guideposts T-sweater project. My knitting group uses scraps–and a lot of creative energies–to arrive at a beautiful and colorful collection each year.

I love Craft hope. I look at it almost daily just ot remind myself that there are thousands of people who care about others. :)

In the last month my kids and me have made scarves to give to two different thrift stores.
One gives the money to the local hospital, they have bought everything from new equipment to helping people pay thier bills.

The other one lets you choose what they will be giving their next donation to. Right now they are raising money for the elementry school to get a new play ground.

I have made aprons to sell for Susan B Komen fundraisers. I would love this book, thanks for the opportunity.

  • I just donated a quilt to the local Cridge center which is quote “a community of caring individuals who believe there’s more to social services than providing programs”.
Always looking for another book to read!

  • I love crafting for charity, and currently I’m crocheting baby-hats for Save the Children, under the name of “Breien voor India” (knitting for India). They already have over 11.000 hats!
    http://www.breivoorindia.nl/
Further I like checking out Craft Hope, for the various charity causes and projects. I donated cloths for project 8, the Gulf oil relief project. I also did a red scarf for project 6, but I was too late in finishing it. Not such a quick knitter!

I love crafting for charity – it just makes it so meaningful and brings joy to my heart. I recently sent a dozen pillowcases for the Cleveland Clinic pediatric cancer patients and I have fabric ready for a half dozen more, to be made after the holidays. Can’t wait for the new Craft Hope project to be announced. Would love to see this book and try out some of the ideas.

  • Msksday

I have made many, many quilts & blankets for our local chapter of Project Linus. My current project is making pillowcase dresses for Little Dresses for Africa. I would love to win this book!

  • Dgtwogirls

My mom and I made knitted caps and booties for the newborns in the NICU units in the hospital who took care of my daughter when she was there for 10 days, 10 years ago, to keep their little bodies warm!

  • Kim

I’m wrapping up my latest craft project, which is sewing dolls for an orphanage called Ninos con Valor (Children with Worth) in Cochabamba, Bolivia. I want to help put smiles on each of their sweet faces. …to see my latest project, see http://thedollprojects.blogspot.com/
    Happy Weekend!

I am a librarian at the Plymouth (MI) District Library. For a couple of years we had a teen knitting a crocheting group that met every other week. We made hundreds of chemo caps that we donated to the Karmanos Cancer Center as well as a couple of blankets that we gave away as well.

Every year we make kitty forts out of cardboard boxes that the teens decorate that we give to the locale humane shelter. The boxes are given to us by a local box making company.
Also, next month we’ll be making some fleece blankets to donate.

  • Tricia C.

I’ve made blankets for Project Linus and a quilt for the Family Service Center. Got all the kids in the Adoption Preservation support group to help; it turned out beautifully. This is such an inspiring book. Thanks for the giving so many of us the impetus to start or continue giving items made with love to those in need.

  • Mama Mel

I would love to win this book! I have helped out with several of Craft Hope’s projects, so they are my favorite crafty charity. I also love making quilts for charities such as Margaret’s Hope Chest, and Project Linus. Thanks for the giveaway! :)

I just began knitting chemo caps and preemie beenies for the local hospital. I also donate scrapbooking items to a local program for orphans and children who have been taken by the state from their parents. It helps the children make lifeline books. scrapbooks with the photos and important to them mementoes of their lives.

I think my 2 latest and greatest craft for a cause efforts were directing and producing a play to benefit a local women’s crisis support group (which included making costumes and props) and baking a cake for a bake sale that helps newly married couples with the expenses of marriage and setting up a home (I baked whole wheat chocolate covered halava bars by request of someone who bought the whole pan for her daughter)

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I didn’t know about this blog or the book. I don’t need to be entered…. I’ll buy it myself to support Jade’s cause! But I want to share my charity crafting:
I’m a medical Social Worker for the VA. So I was happy t o find this charity to support with my crafting: Teddy Care http://teddycare.coastside.net/ They send bears to children everywhere but also to the children of US Military parents being deployed. I regularly make small bears for them, often in camo fabric with a flag heart: http://public.fotki.com/kait/kate/fabric-bears/200805035bearssm.html

I also make larger bears for my local Fisher House. This is a large home on the grounds of the VA that gives free temporary housing to families of the hospitalized veterans and active duty.

and an example of the larger bears:

I’ve been making bears for Teddy Care since 2006. Most of the collection:

There are so many great craft for charity opportunities out there its great to see sites and books that help to promote them. I personally have sewn a quilt top for Quilts of Valor (as well as a bunch of presentation bags), working with the Quilts of Valor group through my quilt guild. In addition, I regularly crochet prayer shawls that are given out via my mom’s church’s prayer shawl ministry. This past summer I made several small crocheted blankets that are going to go to project my local project Linus. I love to craft as it is my way of relaxing and I love to know that my projects are going to comfort and warm someone who needs them.
