Lisa Lam has been running U-Handbag since 2005. She’s grown her company to a point where she has employees, she’s written two books, published patterns, and has a much-loved blog with lots of bag-making tutorials.
I had originally wanted to interview Lisa about what it’s like to have a craft business over a span of years, but the more I talked with her, the more I realized that our interview was really about something else. It was about Lisa’s gift for listening – to her existing customers, to the marketplace, and even to her competitors. Lisa’s built a very successful business through paying attention and responding to what she hears.
I think Lisa’s a great example of what you can accomplish by asking questions and tuning into the answers. There could be an amazing business idea right under your nose. To find it, maybe all you need to do is ask your customers, or blog readers, or friends.
