We’re having a rather nasty spell of wintry weather here in Portland, so I thought it was a good time to post a roundup of tutorials I’ve made for flowery, baskety, and gardeny things. (Dang, Easter’s early this year!)
So, here’s what we have:
Top Row, left to right:
Loopy Felt Flowers, a guest post on Craft Leftovers
Weave a Paper Easter Basket, a guest post on CRAFT
Weave an Easter Basket from Recycled Boxes, a guest post on CraftStylish
Bottom Row, left to right:
Make stiffened fabric baskets, a guest post on CraftStylish
Stitch up a Garden Tool Caddy, a guest post on CRAFT
Turn old leather handbags into a garden journal, a guest post for The Oregonian
Happy Making! And send me some better weather, willya? I would like to go outside sometime this month.

All of those are so cute – but I’m especially digging the basket out of woven boxes. I love that it looks like it has scalloped edges! (Pretty much a sucker for all things scalloped – most recently this: http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/my_weblog/2012/03/scalloped-cuff-diy.html).
Sending you good weather vibes! xo
Hi Diane, I have been working with your book “Kanzashi in Bloom” and love it. My next project is to make the zipper pulls but would like to know what I would use at the back of the flower to attach it to the zipper? They are a great gift idea for my girlfriends.
Thanks for writing the book!
Gale
Hi, Gale – thanks so much for your kind words! For the zipper pull, you can do a couple different things…
- You can back your flower with felt, and then use strong thread and secure sewing to sew a zipper pull clasp to the back. Here’s what those clasps look like: http://www.etsy.com/listing/65709777/50-silver-metal-lanyard-pulls?ref=sr_gallery_1&sref=sr_e32648a02f73219d4e8288c972922d347b90ce6832d3c843e006eeadb3c2e4f5_1344189914_14087883_clasp&ga_includes%5B%5D=materials&ga_search_query=zipper+pull+clasp&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery
- You can also get a zipper pull finding, like this: http://www.firemountaingems.com/details.asp?pn=H208982FD
You simply attach the corded end to your zipper with a slip knot, and then sew the jump ring end to the back of your flower.
Keep laundering in mind when you’re planning your pull! I’d recommend making the pull easy to remove before you wash the item it’s attached to. Hope that helps! Good Luck!
