I had such a great time coming up with this project for Spoonflower. I’ve been obsessing lately about kaleidoscopes, and how they create complex images by capturing one wedge-shaped segment and repeating it. I got to thinking, how about recreating that idea in fabrics?
Each pillow requires two fat quarters, and Spoonflower has a bazillion great prints to play with in this way. Go check out the tutorial!

Seriously??? I love them more than chocolate!
High praise indeed! :-) Thanks, Michelle!
Love it! :)
Thank you for this tutorial!!!
Wow, I find it funny I repinned this on pinterest yesterday, and didn’t get around to tracking down the source. Today I happened to be clicking through a list of blogs someone had with the goal of tracking down embroidery related stuff and lo and behold I find myself here!
I love the pillows, looking forward to making one or two ;)
love these! thank you for your creativity and sharing it!
I have to agree with the others. Those are just gorgeous Diane!
Love! First clue I’d like these: I have a kaleidoscope collection. Second clue: I’ve always had a soft spot for those little, round japanese boxes with the fabric cover that is sort of like a kaleidoscope pattern. Anyway, I really like these and the tutorial looks really eas to follow. Thanks a bunch!
The image of the finished pillows is so appealing but… it pales when compared to seeing these in person!
Your pillows are clever, cheerful, and are a bright focal point sitting on your sofa. Just love them!
I also love the thought that the humongous Spoonflower fabric collection provides endless inspiration for making Kaleidoscope pillows for every season! Christmas comes to mind!!! :-)
Yes! I think this design would work with many smaller-scale prints as well. Even a simple stripe would make two different patterns, depending on whether you oriented it horizontally or vertically.
…For the record, I tried to re-create the shot with Pushkin for two days, to no avail. I even sprinkled catnip on the sofa. That cat knows when he’s being ambushed into a photo session, I’ll give him that. :-)
Out of control awesome.
These are so sophisticated and expensive looking! Really beautiful. The kaleidoscope inspiration is also an inspiring element, particularly since the couch is the very place I like to sit and have a think, spinning my own ideas around….and Spoonflower is such a great company! I love businesses that offer money making opportunities back to their customers!
This is such a fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to make a couple for our living room, AND, I am so glad I found your site. :)
