The new podcast will be a bit delayed, due to some drama behind the scenes, about which I’ll elaborate soon.

Instead, let’s have a purely awesome look at some People who are Freaking Geniuses – the women behind a Tumblog called Handmade Ryan Gosling. This will sound weird if you’re not an internet-meme-junkie, but the whole site is photos of the actor Ryan Gosling, altered with captions that make him into every crafter’s ultimate boyfriend.

For those of you asking “Why Ryan Gosling?!”, the whole thing is part of one of those spontaneous internet memes. There are Ryan Gosling photoblogs for the feminist community, Shakespeare lovers, librarians, typographers, and more. Know Your Meme has a full history and growing library of these links. (Along with a really funny video of Ryan Gosling perusing some of these images. What a brain-bake to be him in this situation, eh?)

The women who brought this to the handmade community are: Ashley Ray, of One in the Hand, with help from Allyson Dykhuizen of The Sweatshop of Love, Lily Ubbelohde of The Owl and the Bee, and Katie Canavan of Under the Red Umbrella.

I asked Ashley how Handmade Ryan Gosling got started. She said:

“Every once in a while, someone on Twitter (myself included) would say something swoon-y about Ryan Gosling. I was introduced to the older Ryan Gosling Tumblogs sometime in November (I know, I was late to the party!) and was very entertained by them. I loved Feminist Ryan Gosling, Biostatistics Ryan Gosling, and my favorite was Librarian Hey Girl (I once wanted to be a librarian). Over the course of a few days, the Tumblrs kept popping up in my mind – I was thinking of how most of my Twitter friends who like him are crafters, and how we all feel territorial about him, as silly as that sounds. “He’s MY pretend boyfriend!” After sharing the same Tumblrs with different people, it finally occurred to me that I could make my own, about a topic I know well – a topic my friends would also get excited about. I imagined around 10 ladies giggling and sharing ideas back and forth.”

…But it’s actually spread like wildfire around the crafty community.

I have the best boyfriend on this green earth, but even I feel oddly comforted by these images, with their captions that speak directly to my crafty heart. And while feeling said comfort, I’m also laughing so hard I spit my coffee.

…So I need to make myself one of these that says “Hey, Girl… don’t worry. I know the crafty podcast thing will come together soon. Meanwhile, let’s go make something with plastic canvas.”

UPDATE: OMG!! Meryl Ann just sent me this. I laughed so hard, I swear I got a core workout in the process. Thanks, Meryl Ann!

This month, I want to introduce you to a blogger who has a great aesthetic eye and an important mission. Elizabeth Rogers Drouillard writes Things Bright, and as the name implies, most days it’s drenched with color. Elizabeth shares things she’s working on, treasures she’s found thrifting, and examples of craft she finds inspiring.

All photography by Elizabeth Rogers Drouillard, used with permission

I always love how her crafty obsessions range all over the map, and how she’s always finding interesting stuff outside the mainstream. From her, I got hooked on Tunisian Crochet (pun intended, sorry) and postcard walls. She sews, she does paper crafts, she draws – a true fellow dabbler.

…But Elizabeth doesn’t just show stuff and say “isn’t this cool?” She’s always asking good questions about the creative process, about using time well, and about what making means. Her writing style is so warm and conversational – stopping by the blog feels like pulling up a stool to chat.

(Which I find to be a nice change from rushing through the big aggregator blogs, looking for quick stuff to pin, like, or tweet. Remember when blog-reading used to be like that?)

Now, let’s talk about her mission. Elizabeth is passionate about fighting human trafficking. You might think that a subject like this doesn’t belong on a craft blog, but I’m always impressed by how well she handles it. Each Tuesday, she posts an essay about how slavery in the modern world seeps into our day-to-day lives.

Elizabeth is a believer in leading people gently into thinking about hard issues. Her writing on the subject isn’t strident or upsetting, but thoughtful.

For example, from a recent post:

“I am absolutely not calling for cynicism or pessimism. Trusting no one and hopelessness lead to despair, not change. People who have been the victims of grievous wrongs like child abuse and human trafficking need our help, not our issues.
No one really wants to grasp these harsh realities.
But allowing ourselves to mentally grasp what others have not only experienced mentally, but physically, spiritually, and emotionally is our first act of unselfishness.”

…And then, she periodically shares companies who sell handmade goods that are made by or sold to support survivors of human trafficking, as in this holiday Merry and Bright series.

…All that, and a Friday series called Into the Woods that encourages you to step away from your computer and get out into nature! That’s a LOT of value rolled into one blog!

Stop over and say howdy to Elizabeth, won’t you?

Many of you may already know Allison Hoffman, but for those who don’t you’re in for a big treat. Allison is an amigurumi artist who draws on a wide swath of pop culture and has a gift for translating famous people into crochet.

All images by Allison Hoffman, used with permission

It all started back in 2009, when she couldn’t find enough Yo Gabba Gabba toys for her sons and decided to create her own. After many requests, she wrote a pattern, and things blossomed from there.

On her blog, CRAFTYisCOOL, Allison shares her various adventures – and she has better adventures than most people I know. She has a certain obsession with making likenesses of famous people and then giving them to said people. She’s given Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory amigurumi to the actors who starred in the original movie. She’s given a Pee-wee Herman doll to Paul Reubens onstage at SXSW. And she’s given a Conan O’Brien doll to Conan.

Perhaps my favorite creation of her is this Bob Ross doll. With this Billy Mitchell running a close second.

Somehow, Allison manages to also release cute free amigurumi patterns regularly. I love these little monsters! There’s also a boom box, an acre of land, and many others.

I really love Allison’s sense of reverence for her subjects – whether she’s crocheting monsters from Where the Wild Things Are, an Assistant to the Regional Manager or a Coraline doll, she pays attention to all the small details that bring the character to life. These are amigurumi I really want to have in the world!

Pop over and give Allison a howdy, won’t you?

Today, my friends, I want to share a very special blogger with you. Donovan Beeson writes the INtangible blog, which is (except for the blog skeleton itself) 100% hand-drawn and lettered.

Since my love of comics re-ignited last year, I’ve been circling around the idea of drawing. Shana suggested I check out Donovan’s blog. And oh, lordy, does it ever make me happy.

All images here by Donovan Beeson, republished with permission.

Each entry is similar to what you see here – a lovely drawing of something or other, a little hand-lettered rumination, and a stamp to number the post.

Topics on the INtangible Blog range from beautiful office supplies to the joy of real-live mail to ephemera to life in Chicago. What I love most is the level of focus. Each post is a single idea, a single moment in time. I love how, in an information-stuffed online environment, Donovan’s level of focus helps me slow down and focus, too.

The blog feels to me like one of those really cool old curiosity shoppes (which must be spelled with a “ppe”), where you can rummage in drawers and cupboards for treasures while some kind of minuet plays on a scratchy old record player in the background.

That’s what I’m saying. It’s atmospheric. I’d love to go on showing you post after post, but you should really pop over there and rummage in the drawers yourself. Enjoy!

Heh! Well, immediately after declaring this an “almost-monthly series,” I got the job at CRAFT and didn’t do much of anything for four months. Oops.

…But I’m excited to pick up where I left off today with Michelle Lichter, whose blog, Mich L. in L.A., is all about making upcycled jewelry. From some crazy-amazing stuff.

Michelle is an expert denizen of the dollar store, and she must shop with her creative wheels spinning madly. She’s always turning surprising things into beautifiul things. On the left there are some pretty necklaces made from plastic outlet covers. On the right is a bracelet made with an inside-out section of a silicone ice cube tray.

One of my favorite features on Michelle’s blog is her series of Mystery Thing Challenge posts, where she shows you a piece she made and then gives you a little time to figure out what it was made from. You can enter your guess to win one of the pieces in question.

Like, for example, what do you think the black tulip bead here is made from?

Dude, it’s a rubber grape. (Visit that link to see a lot of other pretty things she made from those grapes.)

Projects like this make me want to visit dollar and thrift stores with Michelle. Definitely, reading this blog has me using different eyes when I comb through dollar stuff now.

…Speaking of combs, check these out! These pieces are made from plastic hair combs. I just love the way Michelle combines these odd objects with the right beads and findings to get something really pretty.

Michelle also offers up tutorials for her creations, with great tips on cutting and making holes in all these diverse materials. (Here, she’s turning a plastic rattle into a pendant.)

So definitely, check this one out and give Michelle some comment-love, too. Her writing style is fresh and really funny, and she holds a special place in my heart because she likes a good pun. I hope you’re earring me here. (Sorry.)

It began, as so many wonderful things do, with a random conversation on Twitter.

First, Marlo tweeted something about watching a Gene Kelly film. Being a huge Gene fan, I replied, and I cc-ed Rachel, because she loves her some Gene as well. Then Alissa and Stacie chimed in, and Moxie and Tara, and before we knew it, we’d cooked up a Gene Kelly Craft-Along.

This makes me about fifty kinds of happy, because I don’t really have words for how much I love Gene Kelly’s work. That’s pure joy as expressed through dance – and sure, there are legends about him being a crazy perfectionist, but the man had vision. And rock-hard abs.

Oddly, though, I’ve never done much Gene-related crafting. Above is the one Gene craft I’ve ever made in my life: it’s a little creativity shrine. I think it’s from circa 2004.

In fact, it turns out that the world is surprisingly devoid of Gene Kelly-themed crafts. Go do some Googling right now; I’ll wait.

Where’s the Gene-as-sailor amigurumi? Where are the Gene quilts? The mixed media jewelry? And yes, where is the Gene Kelly plastic canvas?

Well, my Twitter pals and I aim to make the world a Gene-Kelly-craftier place, and you’re cordially invited to join in! This is a very informal affair – there aren’t any hard deadlines. The whole thing starts today (which is, appropriately enough, the man’s 100th birthday, were he still with us). From here, feel free to make a Gene-based craft and share it on your blog and our little Flickr group. Want a Twitter hashtag? #GK4EVR.

I’ll be sharing my new Gene project (which, yes, does involve the aforementioned PC, and is epic) in stages here. And if you’d like to do some swooning with me in the comments below, I’d be totally up for that.

Here’s the second post in what I think will be a roughly-monthly series. Last month, I shared Scott Bedford‘s particular brand of genius, and this month, you’ll meet Michele Pacey.

Michele Made Me is a truly inspiring blog. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that Michele is a very focused maker, and she shares her creative journeys in the form of really cool projects and tips.

All images in this post are by Michele Pacey, and used with permission.

She does a lot of amazing work with recycled materials – up above there, you see her toilet paper roll flowers and some egg carton flowers. Seriously, can you even identify the source materials from these designs?

But one of my very favorite things about Michele Made Me is Michele’s series work. I think this is a brilliant way to organize creative exploration! Visit her Series page, and you can link to the projects she’s done to explore a particular theme. There’s a Feast of Flowers series, a Candy Wrapper Chains series, and more.

I think going deep on a specific idea like this makes for some amazing creative breakthroughs – and this shows in Michele’s work. I love how often she makes me stop and think about the humblest materials in fresh ways.

I’ve been following this Halve a Circle series with great interest. Such a simple premise – just materials cut in circles, and then cut in half. What can you make with them? Well, Michele’s already made the butterfly garland pictured above, and some wallflowers, and a cool dragon tail necklace. I wonder what she’ll come up with next?

In fact, I think it’s that anticipation that makes Michele Made Me so much fun to read. Whereas a lot of us bloggers fall into a pattern of saying, “Here’s a cool thing I made, and there’s a cool thing I made,” Michele really digs in and explores creative possibility. The fact that she brings us along for the journey and shares so many beautifully-photographed tutorials of her discoveries – that’s a very generous gift indeed.

If you like Michele’s work, thank her with a comment, won’t you?

(So, have you guessed what the source material is for those heart frames? It’s Kleenex boxes, I know, right?!

Today starts another occasional series of posts. (I loves me some occasional series.)

Obviously there are soooooooooo many blogs in the world. And I think that, as the numbers grow, it gets harder and harder for new bloggers to be seen. So every once in a while, I want to share a blogger I think is doing perfectly amazing work – someone more people should be reading and commenting on.

…And Scott Bedford is the perfect person to lead off this series. His blog, What I Made, is a sort of mad-scientist workshop, filled with surprising inventions. I wanted you to see his entire template, above. I love his drawings! I love the sketchbook-style visuals!

What I Made is all about Scott’s projects. Some are recycled, some are decor-related, and some are kid-related. Many of them incorporate Scott’s drawings, and all of them are in some way ingenious.

This is a mind that turns pencils and paper clips into bugs! Looking at as many blogs as I do all the time, it’s safe to say that I see some of the same ideas over and over. But on What I Made, everything is totally original and surprising, and often hilarious.

Case in point: the projects he designs with kids in mind. I imagine playtime at this guy’s house is just awesome. You should also check out his dart gun targets and cardboard fort with escape chute.

And, then, Scott wraps up each post with a wonderful hand-drawn instruction sheet, which you can download as a PDF! I’ve already amassed a nice collection of these.

Definitely, add What I Made to your feed reader, and if you download one of Scott’s projects, be sure to say howdy and thanks. Just today, he shared the coolest lampshade made from plastic soda bottles.

All images here are copyright Scott Bedford, and used with permission.

Just a quick note today – will you help a fellow crafter out?

Rachel, who many of you already know and love, has a perfectly amazing dimensional embroidery piece in NASA & Etsy’s Space Craft contest.

Rachel’s deep love of space science, and the way it informs her crafting, is always inspiring to me. You can read the whole story of this piece on her blog.

So I emailed her, and she replied that actually, she’d love to make coasters for other cities, but she wasn’t that sure of the proper neighborhood names within those cities.

And thus, a little participatory contest/giveaway thingy was born! Here’s how it works:

Leave a comment here, and nominate your favorite U.S. city to be immortalized in coasters. Be sure to include the names of five recognizable districts in your city. So for example, here in Portland, that might include Downtown, Nob Hill, The Pearl, Hawthorne, and Old Town. (Or, locals, if you disagree, please leave your nominations in the comments!)

Rebecca will produce coaster sets from the three most-voted cities, using your comments to determine the neighborhoods. Everyone who voted for each of the top three cities will be entered in a drawing for a free set of coasters!

You have until noon PST on Wednesday, November 17th. Good Luck!

UPDATE: We have four winning cities: Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and Chicago! Random drawings are in progress, and winners are getting emailed. More to come…

So . . . Summit of Awesome.

First, Kelly, Sara, Christine and Kim of Hello Craft did an absolutely wonderful job organizing it. Portland owes them a big debt of gratitude for choosing our city this year. (More in the whole gratitude thing in a moment.)

Actually, quite a few people have done posts detailing the specific events of the Summit. (See Susan’s series on CRAFT, Hello Craft’s recap post series, and the Summit of Awesome Flickr Pool for a sampling.)

I’ve decided to do something a little different, and share what it felt like to be part of this conference. (And, why I think it’s amazing that the craft community is beginning to organize educational conferences like this.)

(Quick note: all the image in this post are by Hello Craft. My pictures sucked.)

In the online craft community, we’re abundant in many things – connection, conversation, inspiration. Our only real scarcity is face-time. Many of my favorite people in the world live thousands of miles away, and I hang out with them only in the form of words on screens.

Heck, I don’t even get to see my local crafty friends that much – we’re all in our separate studios, working long hours in order to make our living. It’s hard to make time to get together. And even in a city with insanely abundant resources like Portland, so many events seem to be centered more around selling crafts than making them – or discussing them, or learning from each other, or hanging out.

So first and foremost, the Summit was like a technicolor explosion of real, live contact.

Anytime you have an opportunity to spend three days in a big, jubilant crowd of like-minded souls, take it. I got to deepen my friendships with so many people, and meet so many interesting new ones. All of which has added new life to my daily online interactions, and sprouted all kinds of interesting collaborative projects.

I also loved being in a learning environment with other creative people, and I loved that we could learn both business stuff and crafty stuff. The two brain-modes have such a nice synergy – if I got a little tired out learning about pricing, then I could head over to the jewelry-making table and get refreshed. And no matter where I went, there were nice people and great conversation.

Not only that, there’s something very powerful about the immersion of a three-day event. Honestly, much of the information we shared could be had online somewhere or other, if you’re willing to dig around for it. But when you’re in a real room, among friends, with a real teacher who’s been through the same struggles you’re going through, you learn much more effectively.

And then, there’s something powerful in seeing all these fellow crafty entrepreneurs around you and realizing that everyone has the same ups and downs. Everyone is experimenting and growing and trying to make their thing happen, despite weird economy, despite personal fears. And for every aspect of my business I’m clueless about, there’s someone else who knows a ton about it. We have so much to offer each other, but online there are often layers of information hidden, and we’re too prone to feel isolated.

I came away from the Summit with a much clearer mindset about my business, and pages of new ideas scribbled in great excitement.

So, I’d like to leave you with three ideas…

First, if you attended the Summit of Awesome, or you’d just like to help support the cause, pop over to the Hello Craft website and become a member. Hello Craft is a nonprofit that seeks to support and advance individual crafters and the handmade movement. They do good work. And membership is a nice form of creative tithing.

Second, if you’re within range of Seattle this August, you have another chance to get in on this whole powerful face-to-face learning/making experience. Check out the Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs. They have an amazing lineup of workshops, and I highly recommend it. (And remember, it’s a business write-off.)

Lastly, here’s a photo from a post-Summit breakfast with new friends: Ryan, Soma, Michelle, Aly, and Taryn. We made this happen because we loved the Summit experience, and wanted to keep it going.

And that’s perhaps one of the nicest things a craft conference can do for you.

CraftyPod is a blog about making crafts and making media. If you're seeing this post on another website, I'd love to know. Thank you!

I’m so excited to see conversations happening around the craft community about “creative tithing”…

The first instance I saw was over on Olivebites, where Cat talks about taking 10% of her monthly craft-business earnings, and making a point of spending it in the craft community.

Then, this post on Scoutiegirl took up the subject, speaking of the hugely positive effect these kinds of purchases have on your fellow artisans – and how, by actively supporting their dreams, you’re also investing in your own.

And here’s a post from Stephey Baker, talking about how an investment in your creative community is also an investment in living more creatively yourself.

Oh – and Megan just told me about this post she did in December.

I think all this discussion is glorious, because this is an idea who’s time has come.

Because here’s the thing: a large percentage of us run small businesses. A large percentage of us dream of making our living doing what we love.

Well, not to get too blunt about it or anything, but these dreams need customers in order to come true. If you’re constantly marketing your business to your online community, but you aren’t completing the cycle by supporting other businesses, then this whole ecosystem becomes unstable.

A healthy ecosystem needs both producers and consumers. And, to my mind anyway, producers make for some of the most conscious consumers around.

It doesn’t take much money, either. If you take even 5% of your month’s business profit and buy a simple pair of earrings from someone, you’ll have a profound impact on their week. And tiny acts like this, multiplied over our whole community, could add up to more prosperity overall.

So, tell me what you think of this idea…

I’d actually like to see this “creative tithing” idea become very public and visible. I’d love to see some kind of monthly blog-along where we all post about the purchases we made in support of our fellow indie crafters. I’d like to see blog badges and maybe even a public list of participants.

Because here’s the thing (again): accountability is powerful. If we publicly pledge to support other businesses, and then we create a public deadline for ourselves around it, I think it helps us keep the practice alive. Without visibility, it can become just one more great idea we read on a blog somewhere and promptly forget about.

…But this is also a tricky sort of idea. Would it make us feel competitive toward each other? Would it make some people feel left out? Would we stick with it?

Would you participate?

I’d love your honest feedback here. How do you feel about creative tithing, and what are your thoughts on making a public, ongoing project of it? Comment away, please!

UPDATE: Here’s some more coverage of this idea that’s appeared in the blogosphere since this post:

This morning, I registered this here blog with Flattr. Maybe you should register your blog there, too.

Flattr is a new micropayment system. You can use it to earn a little money from your blogging efforts, and more importantly, to give a little something back to the people who make your daily internet experience so rich.

(I love the idea of micropayments, and I’ve talked about them on this blog before.)

Flattr is simple to use: just set up a free account, and install some Flattr buttons on your blog or at the bottom of your posts. (WordPress users, there are plugins for this.)

Then, you pay a little money into your Flattr account. Let’s say, for the sake of illustration, it’s $5.00 a month.

After that, you go about your business normally. browsing the web. But when you see a post you like, and it has a Flattr button at the bottom, you can click that button to Flattr it. That means that the blogger who wrote the post gets a little chunk of your monthly $5.00.

The more posts you Flattr, the more people that monthly $5.00 is split up among. If you Flattr just a few posts, then those few bloggers get bigger payments. Flattr more posts, and bloggers get smaller payments. You don’t have to think about it, and you’ll never end up spending more than the monthly amount you set.

Meanwhile, as other people Flattr your posts, you’ll be earning small payments.

A few of these micropayment systems have shown up over the past couple years, but Flattr seems to be gaining some traction. I’ve seen a number of other crafty bloggers signing up, which is awesome.

I think that, in order to benefit us all, a system like this needs two things:

Widespread adoption

(Duh.) Flattr becomes more viable for our community when more of the community is using it. I’m sitting here with money in my Flattr account, waiting to Flattr your posts. All I need is for you to sign up.

A closed loop

(Quoting the Flattr website here) You have to give to get. So, don’t sign up for Flattr only to make money. Set up your monthly browsing budget, too. It can be as little as the cost of a latte a month, and that does make a difference to your community.

Flattr is based in Sweden, but is seeing participation from all over the world. The system is in beta right now, so it may take you a little while to get an invitation. (Sorry, my update codes are now gone. But anyone else who signs up gets three invites, so check with your blog-friends!)

There’s lots more information at the Flattr site, and also at the Flattr blog.
